My Site, where is my Site?

Way to get Discovered

by William Twiner

Its true, backlinks almost control the internet. To prove it, put up a site and don’t promote it and you will soon find that you site will get almost zero visitors and worst of all no one will know your site even exists. Search Engine marketers know this and as a result many services have been set up , some paying and others free that allow you to submit your URL. But don’t wink at this, although some of the services are not up to par some are very good and can get you the exposure that you need for your sites. Take a look below at the benefit of backlinks for your sites. 1. Initially Backlinks help your site to get spidered, this is important because the first “people” you want to know about your site are the search engines. Googlebot, Inktomi (Yahoo’s spider), and MSN will crawl your site if they find a link on another webmaster site that points to yours. This is very important for initial indexing and trustworthiness of your new website.

2. After indexing, depending on what anchor text your use, which the name of the link, search engine spiders can start identifying your site with the keyword that you have used to alert people about your website. This can be powerful, but if overdone it can cause negative consequences and can be seen as spam if you do not vary your anchor text in your backlinks.

3. Ranking. The more backlinks you have to your site, the better chances you will have will all over ranking. For example, a site will 500 backlinks will generally outperform a website with only 100 backlinks if both sites are optimized for the same keyword. Although it is being said that search engines are changing the algorithm to compliment LSI or Latent Semantic Indexing, backlinks still play a great part. In the old days…actually one year ago, which is old for the internet, many caught on to this and start adding their sites to link farms, they enjoyed great results until the search engines caught onto this and then not only did their ranking disappear, but their site was flagged as spam. Not a good thing. The key to linking is being smart and only linking to sites that do not participate in link farms, you can generally check this on free sites such as marketleap.com or just type in “link:the-domain-name-you-checking.com” and you can easily see if they have themed linking or not. If you value your site, it is best not to participate in this type of linking. Search Engine algorithms are getting extremely complex and they do “investigate” the site that you are linking too. This bring us to PR or page rank.

4. Page rank was set forth by Google to rank a website’s importance. Page rank is a lengthy discussion, but can be found by search Google for their patent which will explain in detail how they rank sites. Bottom line, if you have a link on a high PR site your site get evaluated at a certain level of trustworthiness which can help with faster indexing and ranking.

Hopefully these tips have helped you understand a bit more about ranking and backlinks and the importance to proper website linking.
