How to Choose Which Men's Anti-Aging Skincare Products to Use

by Kylie Reed

The basic difference between women's and men's skincare products is the inclusion of a different fragrance; something that smells "manly."

Ironically, ingredients in fragrances are often detrimental to one's health. It would be better for us, if they simply eliminated fragrances altogether, and offer "unisex" skincare products.

Since the 1960s, dermatologists have recommended that consumers stay away from products that contain fragrances, as well as preservatives, because they are the two of the most common causes of allergic reactions.

A simple allergic reaction to a skin care product can lead to scarring and skin damage that stays with you for life. You would think that given the risk, fragrances would be removed.

With little if any regulation of the industry by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), the cosmetic industry concentrates their resources on creating marketing niches, and fragrances contribute to that effort.

In truth, skincare products should all be created by dermatologists or other healthcare professionals, regardless of the target market.

Instead, companies with limited research staff develop these products while monitoring development costs very closely. In the United States, these companies are not required to conduct safety testing before a skin care product is made available for sale.

Manufacturers have never heeded the suggestion to exclude fragrances and preservatives, especially when a good fragrance and long shelf life make their product more attractive to the consumer.

And really, when you think about it, what harm can a little fragrance do when it comes to women's or men's anti-aging skincare products? The term "fragrance," actually may refer to any one of thousands of different chemicals used to create a fragrance or provide preservation.

Many of these chemicals are known toxins and some are known to cause cancer. All of them can stimulate responses in the central nervous system, which is linked directly to the olfactory system that includes the nose.

Artificial fragrances are known to have caused depression, agitation, irritability and may also be linked to chronic fatigue and other health problems. Does that sound healthy to have in women's and men's skincare products?

You may not be allergic to the preservatives used, but what about the other health issues? The most common preservatives are parabens and some skin care products contain as many as five different variations of parabens. Research indicates that parabens can influence the growth of cancerous tumors. Plus, parabens can migrate into tissues when applied to the skin and predispose those cells to cancer.

As the use of chemicals has grown in our society, so has the incidence of cancer. At one time, a person's risk of cancer was 1 in 50. That probability today is 1 in 3 for women and 1 in 2 for men.

We can't avoid exposure to a lot of chemicals in our society, but it's certainly unnecessary to expose ourselves to increased risk by using skincare creams that contain known or suspected carcinogens.

With all that potential risk, are you willing to let the skin care manufacturer decide for you whether a small amount of chemically laden fragrance is OK for you?

There's no reason skincare products can't include ingredients that are natural anti-inflammatory. These products should also contain compounds that reduce redness naturally, protect from sun damage and soothe irritations caused by shaving and overexposure.

Skincare materials should include ingredients that increase skin cell proliferation and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin fibers. Effective moisturizers should also be included, to provide increased resistance to damage.

Skincare products that included the following natural ingredients will improve the overall good health of your skin: Keratin derived from New Zealand sheep's wool, Wakame kelp, capuacu butter, Babassu wax, grape seed oil, vitamin B5, E, coenzyme Q10 and witch hazel.

The best men's skincare creams contain all of these ingredients with no preservatives or fragrances. Look for them and you'll look younger and stay healthier.
