Top Scuba Diving Holiday Destinations

Underwater holiday ideas…

by Sam Qam

If you haven't tried it yet, SCUBA diving is a sport that is as close to being in space as most people are ever likely to get. SCUBA originally stands for 'self-contained underwater breathing apparatus' but is now a word in its own right. Scuba diving involves donning breathing apparatus, a snorkel and flippers and swimming around underwater, perhaps exploring the sea life or a reef. This sport or pastime is very popular around the world and leads people to seek out new and more interesting places to dive.

Here are some of the top destinations in the world for scuba diving:

Africa – Egypt – Red Sea

From the tourist town of Sharm-El-Sheikh you have access to some of the most incredible underwater scenery in the world. There are countless hotels and diving schools to look after you and if you are an experienced diver then there are many options for advanced diving, wreck diving, deep diving and adventure diving.

Oceania – Australia – Great Barrier Reef

If it wasn't underwater you could probably see it from space. The Great Barrier Reef is an enormous natural reef running up parts of the east coast of Australia that is phenomenal for divers of all abilities. Heron Island in particular is an ideal location for divers as it is low on tourists and high on serene post dive relaxation spots.

Caribbean – Cayman Islands – Grand Cayman

If you want clear waters, this is the location for you. With visibility from 80 to 150 feet in many locations you can float around in a sea of blue with shafts of light glistening through the waters illuminating the shallow reefs with an abundance of tropical sea life just a short distance away from epic drop offs.

USA – Hawaii

Hawaii needs no introduction. While it may be a bit tricky to get to, if you want a truly luxurious experience both for diving with spearfishing equipment and holidaying then get yourself to the sunny island in the middle of the pacific. You will see huge turtles, sharks, a great many dive shops and the odd volcano when you come to the surface.

Europe – Norway - Gulen

While it may be a bit extreme and not for novices, and a bit cold of course, Norway's Gulen dive resorts are at the mouth of one of the most stunning fjords in the region. You can explore astonishing wrecks, dozens and dozens of species and some very unique underwater flora.

Where are you going to go first?
