Self-Storage Business Is Booming In Hawaii

Self-Storage Business

Got stuff? StorSecure says you can never have too much of it.

"You cannot duplicate grandma's rocker or the tricycle," said Annette Pang, co-owner of StorSecure Self-Storage.

Pang says if you can't throw it away, you can store it at their newest facility in Kapolei. Stor-secure is just one of dozens of self-storage facilities across Oahu. "For developers, they would like to build a storage facility day after day after day because the profit is almost instantaneous," said Stephany Sofos, a real-estate analyst.

Sofos says self-storage centers are cheap to build, inexpensive to run, and in high-demand. Even with 40 facilities on Oahu and 17 more in the works, Sofos says there is still room for more.

"Do I think we have met maximum use? No. I don't think so, because when you have 98 percent occupancy, you know there is still a high demand for it," said Sofos.

More people are moving to Honolulu from the mainland where houses are bigger, on average one-thousand square feet bigger. New residents are willing to pay the price to save their stuff that doesn't fit in their Oahu-sized homes.

"They are willing to pay $100 to $300 a month for place to keep their stuff that they never use!," said Sofos.

"The wine container, or your stamp collection, or the high school jacket that you wore to the first prom," said Pang. Rental units go for as much as $700 a month, and despite increased competion, experts say rental prices will remain about the same. That's because more money is being spent to build high-tech facilities with climate controlled units, built-in security and 24-hour access. So if you want it, you can keep it in style. But whether you actually need it, that's another question.

"The bottom line is, in today's world, if you aren't using it, you shouldn't have it," said Sofos. Pang disagrees.

"This is what we're made of...we're made of memories, and connections to others...so StorSecure your treasures!," said Pang.

Real estate experts say self-storage centers are starting to reach-- or exceed--demand in the Ewa plains and urban Honolulu. But there is still need for more in East, Central and Winward Oahu.

Hawaii Self Storage celebrates with groups that serve Waianae Coast

Hawaii Literacy runs the bookmobile that makes three stops two times a week in Waianae. The bookmobile lends out books and educational games to people who may not be able to get to a library. One of the stops is at 'Ohana Ola O Kahumana Center, which recently expanded its transitional housing center by adding 48 new two- and three-bedroom units for homeless transitioning to renting.

In addition, the expansion includes administrative offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, a certified kitchen, childcare center and volleyball court on the Waianae Coast. The event is free and open to the public, please RSVP first by calling 696-4095.

As a locally owned company, Hawaii Self Storage has made it their mission to help the community, and supports Hawaii Literacy's many programs through an annual book drives at the three Hawaii Self Storage locations. This year the book drive kicks off Oct. 1 where Hawaii Self Storage will offer a $2 credit toward customers' next month locker rental for each new or gently used book or educational game donated during the drive. Hawaii Self Storage also runs the Lockers to Literacy outreach program that delivered 1,715 books to 11 public elementary schools this year. Through this program, which is being implemented with the help of Read to Me International, $2 from every new locker rental is donated to a fund that is used to purchase books. As Hawaii Self Storage increases in locations (and subsequent locker rentals) this fund is expecting to grow by 2008 to about $18,000/year, vastly increasing the students it impacts.

Since 1971, Hawaii Literacy has helped thousands of adults learn the basic reading and writing skills to get better jobs, improve their parenting skills, and succeed in life.

Hawaii's largest self storage company with facilities in Kaimuki, Pearl City and Salt Lake, Hawaii Self Storage offers 24-hour access and air conditioning, the highest level of security, covered loading and unloading, free pick-up, free estimates, and canoe, kayak and surfboard storage. For small business customers, Hawaii Self Storage offers a business center complete with phone, fax, and wireless Internet service as well as free package acceptance service.
