Appropriate Party Goods for a Halloween Block Party

by Mark Etinger

A Halloween block party is a fun way to socialize with your neighbors and forge a better sense of community. The key to hosting a successful Halloween Block Party is to be organized and plan ahead. You also need to invest in the appropriate party ware and other goods.

In order to organize a Halloween block party, you first need to arrange a meeting with your neighbors to get them to participate. If you host the gathering in your home, you need to notify people of the date, time, and location by putting flyers in mailboxes or sending out a mass e-mail. Although the first method is more time-consuming, it may be the easiest way to get in touch with all your neighbors, since you may not have an email address for every household on the street. At the meeting, you and your guests should decide how each neighbor will contribute to the event.

What games, activities, and food will be available? Having a potluck will probably be the cheapest way to feed the expected crowd; making desserts, games, and activities Halloween-themed. See what other materials people may donate. Someone\'s place of employment, for example, may have spare tables and chairs. You and your neighbors may also want to form different subcommittees to be in charge of different aspects of planning. You and the group should also start a collection to pool money for different supplies and appoint a treasurer to manage the funds.

Use the money to purchase festive disposable cutlery, plates, cups, napkins, and other dinnerware as well as garbage bags, paper towels, and other cleanup materials. If you order these items online, you will be able to buy them in bulk for discounted prices. To create a festive atmosphere, buy pumpkins, hay, etc; if you live near a farm it may be willing to give you these items or sell them to you for a reasonable price.

Games and activities should be simple and engaging for children of all ages. Start the parade off with a costume parade; have the neighbors at one end of the street begin the parade and then march up to the party site. Ask neighbors who play instruments to act as the marching band so that you have musical accompaniment as walk to your destination.

You may need proper zoning permits, etc. to utilize part of the street, such as a cul-de-sac, for the event. Set up bright and early the morning of the party, before the official parade. An arts and crafts station will have mass appeal and may offer pumpkin painting, supervised carving, and mask-making. Silly-scary "your-face-here" cutouts will entertain the children and make for great photo opportunities. And, friendly competitions, such as best Jack-o-Lantern, prettiest/scariest scarecrow, best costume, etc. will engage both adults and children.

With the appropriate party goods, your Halloween block party will be a huge success!
