Skiing Holidays In Winter

by Jez Rourke

A skiing holiday in winter can offer the opportunity to celebrate Christmas and new year, or just to beat away those winter blues. Either way, skiing during winter can offer something for every ability and every taste.

If you are not too keen on travelling, Arosa in Switzerland isn't too far away. The setting houses more than seventy kilometres of pistes in a stunning setting. Apres-ski here is admittedly a bit quieter than in some of the main resorts but, post- Christmas that might not be such a bad thing.

Speaking of Switzerland, Davos is cut from an altogether more expensive cloth, but your chances of spotting movie stars and royalty are much higher if that's your thing. Just try not to slew sideways into the paparazzi of a dozen different nations as they spend their days flailing about on the piste in search of a scoop.

Chamonix is as pretty as a charm bracelet, with some bracing, surging runs on the pistes and an unmistakably French feel. That said, the mix- both on and off the slopes- is much more international these days, and becoming more so as word about the quality of its famous aprs-ski nightlife does the rounds of the ski and party circuits. Expect this one to keep growing.

If you want to keep a lid on the expenses, then entertain the idea of Andorra. This tiny enclave is half Spanish and half French, it is easily accessible from many airports, such as Barcelona, and benefits from budget airlines such as EasyJet.

Andorra has built up its reputation over the years and is now seen as being far more modern and stylish than it once used to be. The lift system has been greatly improved and the accommodation is a lot better. Sadly, Andorra is no longer as cheap as it once was. Recent improvements have led to an increase in costs, although you do get better value for your money here than in many other famous resorts to the East of Europe.

If you are looking for some escapism you should head over to Alberta in Canada to discover the wonderful Rocky Mountain of Banff, or Lake Louise for some stunning views? If you are interested in celeb-spotting pay a visit over the border to Vail in Colarado, to experience a once in a lifetime trip?
