Wedding Photographer Tips

by Autumn Lockwood

So much time and money goes into planning your wedding day that you want to make sure all of the details are covered. One important detail to make sure you don't overlook is the wedding photographer. Hiring a good one is very important, as you want your special day to be recorded with beautiful photographs that you can cherish for years to come. Here is a brief guide to help you know some of the things to consider when you hire your wedding photographer.

Budget it Out

Unfortunately, cost is going to play a large part in your ability to select a wedding photographer. A wedding is an expensive event, so you should expect to pay a higher price for a good and experienced photographer. Your budget should not only include the cost of the photographer, but also include other incidentals, including picture frames, photo albums, and the cost of prints. Once you have figured out how much you can afford to spend, you can look for a photographer that will work within your budget. Just remember that photographers that work for less often do so for a reason, so buyer beware.

Find Your Style

What kind of style do you like? Classic portraiture, wedding photo-journalism or candid shots? Every photographer has their own style of shooting so get familiar with their work and style before you agree to anything. Always meet with each photographer and ask to see examples of their work. Meeting with the photographer will help you understand their personality and artistic style to ultimately see if they're a good fit. Remember that a wedding photographer is going to be present throughout your wedding - try to choose someone that you will be happy to have spend time with your guests.

Check for Experience

Choosing a wedding photographer is not something you should leave to the roll of a dice. Once you find a photographer who matches your personal style and shoots in a manner that you like, make sure to get at least 3 references of previous clients so you can speak with them about the service they received. Find out how the photographer worked at the wedding- were they responsive, were they on time and how did they respond to any problems?. Credentials are important, but nothing is more telling than the stories of former clients.

Ask Around, Now

Speak with your friends and family about wedding photographers they may have used. Wedding photography is a specific niche so often the best wedding photographers have worked for someone you know. As soon as you have chosen your wedding date, the first detail that you should attend to is finding the wedding photographer - the best wedding photographers are in high demand, and can be booked from months to a year in advance. Nothing can be as disapointing as getting your heart set on someone only to find that they have already booked another event on your wedding day.

Get it in Writing

As stated above, a wedding is a once in a lifetime experience. No matter how amazing the photographer may be, you are putting a lot of faith in their ability to show up and shoot the photographs you want. As with other business agreements, it is always important to get the promises in a written contract form. Included in the agreement should be details such as what they are expected to do, what time you expect them to start taking pictures, and how long they will be staying. If your photographer can't back up his or her promises in writing, find someone else.

Finding a wedding photographer can be one of the most stressful parts of planning a wedding, but if you start early and cover your bases you should have no trouble finding the perfect shooter for your style and budget. Once you have chosen your wedding photographer you can give attention to all of the other important wedding detalis!
