Homeschooling And The Ins And Outs Of Teaching Your Children Yourself
If teaching your children at home is too daunting a prospect then take some time to examine it closely. You may be surprised to discover just how easy it is.
Many people see homeschooling very much as 'do it yourself education' and the majority of parents immediately see themselves as the 'you' in 'yourself'. As a result, many parents with busy lives making a living or undertaking other important activities, and particularly single parents, dismiss any ideas of homeschooling out of hand. But are they correct to take this course of action?
Homeschooling has been around for an extremely long time and involves more than one million children in the US alone and experience shows us that are many options open to parents today. Indeed, it is not surprising to find that parents in almost any situation which you can think of have found a solution to homeschooling their children.
Of course we are all familiar with the two parent family where dad goes out to work and mum stays home and this situation makes homeschooling a quite simple option. Since the 1960s our society has changed a great deal and now there are a whole spectrum of family situations including, single parents, same-sex couples, extended families, role reversal and much more.
Each situation brings with it both problems and advantages for homeschooling and it is a matter of examining both and then looking for ways to overcome the obstacles and enhance the advantages.
As an example, a number of parents turn to their wider family or to friends for assistance and ask friends or family into their home to help. This is not new of course and, for a very long time, it was not uncommon for families to offer a friend or an older family member such as an uncle a place to stay in exchange for assisting with the education and care of a child.
Help can also often come from neighbors. A number of 'stay-at-home' moms already provide day care for children and, as homeschooling continues to spread, babysitting services are increasingly being extended to include homeschooling.
In a lot of instances families are also getting together to provide homeschooling on a 'group' basis.
Yet another increasingly popular option is that of employing a tutor. Tutors today come from a wide range of different backgrounds, in all age groups and include both specialists, such as those teaching music or languages, as well as of course general tutors. In fact, it is not uncommon to find ex-public or private school teachers who have become dissatisfied with the 'system' turning to tutoring because of their basic love of teaching.
The majority of parents think that tutoring is quite simply out of their reach financially but, after some careful research, they are often surprised to learn that the cost of tutoring can indeed be within their reach.
One other very important consideration is the children themselves. It is often surprising just how well motivated children are by the independence which homeschooling brings and many parents discover that educating a child at home can take much less time than you might imagine.
Should you find that you are tempted by the advantages of homeschooling over the poor quality of the public school system then do not fall into the common pitfall of simply dismissing the idea out-of-hand. Take the time to explore the options open to you and you might well be surprised to find that it is not as difficult as you think.
