by Lorraine Aumend

When it comes to the mouse, there are two camps of people. Those who like using it and those who only use it when they absolutely have to. It doesn't matter which way you like to navigate around you computer, it's still a good idea to learn some keyboard shortcuts. There is so much more you can do using your keyboard. Most people don't even have a clue! There are websites you can explore that can teach you hundreds of ways to use your keyboard that you can't even imagine. If you're looking at a video, for example, and want to make it full screen, you can press the UP arrow key and the Windows key to easily accomplish this. Conversely, to go back to your minimized view, you would press the DOWN arrow key and the Windows key. A helpful key sequence to remember, if you want to preview a file before you open it, is ALT + P. The advantage of this feature is you can preview your saved photos, text documents, and any videos. There are many more keyboard shortcuts that can make working with your PC easier and faster.

If you are looking for information on the internet, you most likely open your browser and use one of the search engines to do a search. You'll probably love the convenient Windows 7 feature that lets you conduct searches from your desktop without the need of opening your browser. To do this, you use 'search connectors' for the different sites that you search; for example, YouTube. One of the benefits of this feature is the fact that you can do quick search of websites you frequently visit without the need of going through your browser. If you need a search connector for a website that doesn't provide one for you to download, you can learn how to create your own at websites set up for that purpose.

If you want Windows to have better speed, only keep programs on your PC that you use. Most computers come loaded with software and applications that most users never open. However, these unused programs still use your memory and this slows your computer down. It's an easy matter to delete the programs and software that you have no interest in. There are software applications listed on your start-up menu that open when you start your computer. You can make your computer run faster by disabling the programs that you don't want to open this way. Don't slow down your computer unnecessarily during start-up by loading a bunch of software apps you won't be using.

There is no end to the types of tips and shortcuts that Windows offers you. Once you've started using them, you will want more. There will obviously be more shortcuts and tips you could learn than you could possibly ever use. You will be better off just learning ones that relate to the way you prefer to use your computer. We've given you a preview of a few of the shortcuts that are available with Windows. It's up to you now to research and learn more.
