Holidays abroad or holidays at home is one of the inevitable questions asked by many people at this particular time of year. As the holiday season approaches, many people are browsing through the holiday brochures or surfing the internet for ideas on where to spend their holidays or a short break.

With the problems that may holidaymakers have been having over the last months with the air traffic controllers in various countries, then the prospect of holidaying at home seems even more attractive. There is no doubt that some of the warmer climes are inviting, but, truth be told, there is no better place when the weather is good than in our own country.

Destination is important, of course, and would seem to be paramount in the decision of 'where to stay'. North, south, east or west, there are a plethora of different locations that would suit most families and individuals seeking to enjoy a holiday or a break away.

A little known part of England which is rapidly growing in popularity is the north eastern coast. A town worth mentioning in particular that has seen a large growth in the tourist market is Wonderful Whitby. One of the original spa towns which attracted the Victorians in the eighteenth century, the Whitby of today has changed little since then in respect of the buildings but has changed enormously in respect of the facilities available.

Whitby is an historic fishing port with seafaring connections. Best known with regard to Whitby Abbey perched on the cliff top on the East side, there is the connection with Sir Captain James Cook the famous adventurer and explorer who was apprenticed as a young boy in the shipbuilding industry before leaving to commence his adventures with the Royal Navy. There are numerous attractions in the town to interest the visitor, but in addition there must be the accommodation to cater to the most discerning of visitors. Whitby excels in this department with its wide range of hotels and guest houses which are numerous in choice and styles available. The vast majority of the accommodation providers in Whitby comply with the rules and regulations as laid down by the English Tourist Board which has a grading system for both hotels and for guest houses. The grades commence at one star through to five stars for the most excellent. The hotels, obviously, are graded on differing systems from the guest houses as the services provided by the hotels cannot be achieved by the smaller providers. Any establishment included on the local bureau of accommodation must adhere to the safety precautions in respect of fire safety and hygiene certification.

Styles vary from one establishment to the other but can include some most unusual accommodation types including Gothic, modern boutique and olde worlde. The hotels may offer a little more upmarket rooms, however, the standards of the guest houses are improving annually. Whitby is a wonderful town in a stunning location at the edge of the North Yorkshire moors and the North Yorkshire coastline, a wide range of accommodation is available and, in total, is a recipe for a relaxing holiday.
