Getting Ready For Vacation? Prepare Your Home's Security Too

by Ban Mor

Who doesn't like to go on vacation? When you get ready to go on a trip, even if it is only for a weekend, you plan ahead. You plan out what you will wear, where you will stay, but what do you do to prepare your home for your vacancy? Burglars love to take advantage of homes that are vacant while their owners are away on vacation. Therefore, when you make your list of preparation to-dos and what to pack, make sure to also make a list for increasing your home's security while you are gone.

Stop All Deliveries

You do not need the mail or the newspaper to arrive while you are away. So call the postal service and your other local subscriptions and make sure that all deliveries are stopped while you are gone. Leaving a pile of newspapers or even mail in the mailbox is a clear indicator to potential robbers that you are not home.

Trim the Shrubs

While you are getting the perfect hair cut for your trip, consider cutting down some shrubs outside. If you have bushes that are located just in front of windows to your home, cut them down to where a person cannot easily hide in them. Burglars have a tendency to hide behind shrubs and bushes while waiting to break into a home.

Skip Social Media Updates

Though you are tempted to tell the world about your vacation or even keep them updated as you prepare, avoid announcing any vacation plans or time away from home on social media sites. Even though you know your friends and family well, you do not know who has access to their computers or their social media homepages.

Talk to the Neighbors

Before you leave, tell your neighbors your vacation plans. Consider having a neighbor check on the property a few times while you are away to ensure that nothing has happened. Let the neighbors know to call the police immediately if anything happens or if they notice any unusual activity around your house.

Install Light Timers and Motion Detectors

The best way to deter a burglary is light. Have light timers installed inside your home that will automatically turn on and make it appear as though you are home. Use motion detection lights outside to help deter anyone from prowling around on your property as well as help notify the neighbors if someone has walked onto your yard.
