Crufts 2012: The Greatest Dog Show On Earth

Crufts is quite likely the greatest dog show on our planet and a contest that is synonymous with style, best of species and one that takes a very special place in dog owner's hearts around the world. Founded by Charles Cruft, the first competition took place in 1891 in London with 2,437 entries composing of over 36 breeds. Ever since that infamous day in 1891 Crufts has been showcasing talented dogs and handlers from around the world and this year's competition will comprise of nearly 28,000 of the world's best dogs competing for an array of categories. This year's event will be held in the NEC in Birmingham, England from the 8-11 of March. In keeping with the Crufts tradition, the range of categories is thrilling and offers an event that every breed of dog can shine in. The agility events are a popular favorite with people from all over the world who recall watching the Crufts event on the BBC. During the agility competition dogs must maneuver, under the guidance of their owners, through and around a variety of obstacles, all the while under the pressure of a ticking clock. The flyball competition is always fantastic fun for the 160,000 guests expected to attend this year. The flyball competition is a relay race that comprises of teams of four dogs that compete against each other in a knockout competition. Each dog has to jump though a series of hurdles and then step on a box, which releases a ball. Once this ball is released, the dog must return, with the ball, to the start of the course so that one of its team can repeat the challenge. The team with the fastest time wins. Crufts also holds the International Junior Handling competition. A competition in which Junior Handler winners from 34 countries compete to earn the ultimate title. Although the future handlers of tomorrow visit Crufts from all across the globe, due to quarantine regulations, the handlers must borrow dogs from British enthusiasts, making the competition all the more interesting and entertaining. Although the main focus of the event is the dog show, the Crufts event has lots to offer away from the main stage. There is a huge variety of dog-related merchandise for sale and visitors to the event have the opportunity to talk to expert owners on what it takes to breed and care for the perfect dog. Of course, a conversation about Crufts would not be complete without mentioning the "Best in Show" competition. This is the peak of canine excellence. Every year, one lucky dog is crowned Best in Show, and as you can imagine, the canines that collect this coveted prize, are impeccable in appearance, personality and breed. Previous winners included 2011's victor, Vbos The Kentuckian, a Flat Coated Retriever and 2010's champion, Hungargunn Bear It'n Mind, A Hungarian Vizsla. Who will receive the crown this year? Well the pundits are already busy with speculation, but as is typical with the Crufts event, expect the unexpected
