New York Fashion

by Tamara Jacobs

Scott Schuman, or more famously known as the Sartorialist, is an extremely well known fashion blogger. He is not a designer and doesn't inundate his readers with lots of editorial about influences, designers, cuts or fabrics. Instead he lets his camera do the talking. He travels to the world's fashion capitals - New York, London, Paris, Milan, Tokyo, Florence etc. and snaps people on the street. With his blog he has created a "two-way dialogue about the world of fashion and its relationship to daily life."

I make a point of scrolling through his blog regularly and can't help but notice the high percentage of photographs that are taken in New York City. Anyone who has been to New York City knows that it is quite possibly the most creative city on earth. It is full of ambitious people with loud mouths and bold attitudes, and they believe in the depths of their hearts that they have every right to have them because they are fabulous, and you know what? They're right.

In New York City anything goes. The more unusual your outfit, the more courage you're considered to have for wearing it. Women's shorts are short, their accessories often vintage, their sunglasses concealing, their skin, often tattooed. Women don't just wake up after a night at their boyfriends and walk home in his shirt, they spend the day in it. Why not, just pair it with the sandals, pumps or heels they wore the night before and they're good to go.

Guys don't just go to the store for beer by foot or car, they go by skateboard and look extremely cool skating home with a twelve-pack in each hand.

New York City is where trends are born. They are where innovators go for inspiration. They are where brands go to shout about themselves. New Yorkers promote the things they love no matter what they are or what other people say. When you go to New York you can see why so many films, television shows and music videos are filmed there. A homeless man asleep in a shopping cart in the middle of a park, a group of old men sitting outside of a church, girls conversing in front of a subway station, every scene looks like it should be captured and popularised in some way. The city is grungy, the streets dirty, the walls graffitied. The best shops and restaurants are all hidden, so you've got to keep your eyes peeled.

New Yorkers have their finger on the pulse. Observe them, study them and then go out and be as individual as they are.
