How the Internet Breeds Better Nurses

I feel better online at least…

by Sam Qam

Never has there been more information available so close to every person's finger tips in the world than right now. The internet is a massively important tool that has changed the lives of everyone and not least those who are learning.

Nurses have to go through some rigorous training before they can hit the wards and treat patients, and even then they can't just sit back and rely on a few years of teaching to see them through their career. No they need to keep constantly updating their knowledge to ensure they are always at the top of their game.

The internet is now the very best tool to help train and keep training nurses. It has made nurses better informed faster and will be the first choice destination for information for 90% of all young nurses both in training and in the work place.

Search Engines

Above all search engines like Google have become very reliable and even before you have finished typing what you are looking for; it has often already delivered you a result matching what you are looking for.

What search engines do is constantly roam around the internet reading everything and deciding in advance what is most relevant for every term imaginable. Then when you type in something like 'how much is too much pain killers' then it will instantly take you to a page that tells you the answer to your question.

Finding a Job

It is crucial that a nurse finds the right job for them, and likewise it is crucial that an employer can find the right nurse for their position, so that a nurse can be the best they can be. The internet is a perfect place for employers and employees to meet as it allows nurses to be judged on their academic merit and experience and makes it easier for nurses to find and apply for jobs outside their own town such as the broad range of NHS nursing jobs. There are also regularly an abundance of nursing jobs in London for instance and this can make the whole application process much easier.

Study

Also, the internet and search engines are absolutely invaluable for researching topics while studying. For instance, if a student nurse was writing a paper on influential nurses they would be able to find out in seconds that Mary Seacole was passed over by Florence Nightingale when she was choosing nurses to take to the front, so Mary had to pay her own way to get to the Crimean War. The internet just makes studying so much faster than leafing through dusty books and when a nurse has little time between placements and practical classes, having a faster way to get the information needed is invaluable.
