Introduction to employee leasing

by Joushua James

Employee leasing is just the same as any kind of outsourcing, only that here it is human resource outsourcing. It is also known as "Contract Staffing" and firms that are engaged in employee leasing are also known as “Professional Employer Organizations” or PEO's. Employee leasing firms or PEO’s essentially function as an extension of a company’s business, but they function away from the company premises. In employee leasing, there is a co-employment relationship between the Professional Employer Organization, the employee and the client company. The PEO will take the responsibility for managing their client company’s human resources thereby enabling the client company to manage core business activities such as product development and production, marketing, sales, and service. In other words, they will acquire and lease back some or all of their client’s employees and when doing so they take on the employer responsibilities of payroll, benefits, and other related aspects for the leased employees. The responsibilities of the Professional Employer Organization entitles them to certain levels control or decision-making in human resources management matters, but they do not have to account for management of their clients' operations is the areas of strategic planning, output, or profitability. If you are considering employee leasing, there are many ways by which you stand to gain as employer. You can keep your current staff as such, but all the necessary, time-consuming paperwork and the liability associated with being an employer, is taken care of by the PEO. They will take care of services such as payroll processing, maintaining employee records, dealing with compensation claims, filling in government required forms and much more. They will give you the necessary expertise in the areas of staffing, testing, training, compensation, benefits, employee relations, and team building. The aim of a Professional Employer Organization, in taking up the employer risks of it’s clients is to provide an integrated and cost effective approach to human resources management and administration. Since the “Business of Employment” is taken care of by the Professional Employer Organization, the client company is free to concentrate on key business areas which require their complete attention to attain business goals and objectives.
