For many of us the idea of a few days away is a temptation that we can't resist. City breaks are the ideal way to get away from the stresses of work and enjoy soaking up some culture. With that in mind, this article looks at 3 European capital cities that will quench your cultural thirst.

Rome

Rome is a city steeped in history, dissected by the Tiber River, it was the hub of the Roman Empire and provides travellers with the chance to see some of the globes most recognisable sights. There is so much to do here that you may struggle to fit it all in to just a few days. Some of the things that you absolutely must see include the Vatican City, home to the Pope and the epicentre of the Catholic religion, the Vatican is home to some of the most famous art in the world.

The Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre that was built in the Roman Empire. A visit here will inform you of some of the ancient customs of the Romans and allow you to marvel at the spectacle of the gladiatorial conquests that previously took place there. If the architecture of Rome inspires you the Trevi fountain should also be visited, and who knows, maybe after tossing a coin in here, all your wishes will come true.

Paris

France's capital, Paris, is frequently enjoyed by tourists who see it as the ideal romantic getaway. However, beyond the well- known attractions of the Eiffel tower, the Louvre and the Sacre-Coeur there is lots to be enjoyed.

Fans of modern art might consider the Pompidou Centre as an appealing alternative to the classic art that saturates the city. A pleasant afternoon can be spent strolling along the banks of the Seine, either along the Left Bank (La Rive Gauche) that used to be home to the cities creative types like artists, writers and philosophers, or on the Ile de la Cite, the island in the middle of the Seine, to visit the Notre Dame Cathedral.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh, known affectionately as Auld Reekie, will provide any visitors with the opportunity to visit lots of historical sights such as the castle or the Walter Scott monument. However, renting an Edinburgh apartment in August will provide you with an entirely different experience of the city.

For the month of August the city hosts the world festival fringe festival. The city is transformed in to a hub of activity as performers look to promote and exhibit their shows, of every ilk imaginable, in many of the cities temporary performance spaces. Whatever your taste in the arts, there will be something here to satisfy you.
