Things to Keep in Mind About Hotel and Travel When Going to Charleston

by William McDowell

When you hear the word vacation, what do you think of? Vacations can represent many things to many people. Some like to shop around the town while many others would prefer to pass the entire day relaxing at the pool. If you are wishy-washy like me, you favor a little bit of both. On the one hand, because I have traveled someplace different from my home, I had better view some sights. But then again, if I exhaust myself zooming from destination to destination, when I make it back to my home I will need another vacation to recover. Keep the following tips in mind when travelling to Charleston.

The first thing you will want to do is finish as much in advance as possible. That means stuff like switching currency when necessary, memorizing maps of the region, renting a means of transportation (did someone say Harley?), booking a flight, and getting a hotel that satisfies your wants. As luck would have it, many of these labors have become easier and cheaper through the internet, so before you arrive at your destination, you could save some dough by looking for deals on the internet.

When it comes to getting the perfect hotel, remember to look with care. Some things to think about would be how it is ranked; is it a 3 star hotel or a 4 star one? Where is it at? If you are traveling to Disneyland but your hotel is in San Francisco, you will waste a large amount of your vacation behind the wheel. Are you planning on staying at the hotel quite a bit, and if you are going to be there, what type of comforts do they provide? I'll never forget the time I went out on our family vacation to kick back by the hotel pool, only to discover that the hotel I was at didn't have one. I am sure that I must have looked rather odd walking around the lobby with my inflatable innertube around my waist and no swimming pool to be found.

The next item to consider is what to pack. The general rule-of-thumb is not to go overboard. Keep it simple, traveler. Begin by familiarizing yourself with the weather conditions so that you know what you ought to pack, but avoid over-packing. Remember, if you forget something, odds are that you can purchase a replacement. As a matter of fact, take as few clothes as possible. I suggest packing older clothing which can be discarded along the way. Depending on where you are, you may locate charities that would be happy to take clothing off of your hands. Besides, this can make more room for keepsakes.

When it comes to entertainment, avoid getting too out-of-control. For instance, don’t pack more than one book. If you are able to read an entire book, give that one away and go buy another one. It’s time to get out and go to the store anyway, you bookworm. Instead, bring something to take notes with and write your own book. This does not necessarily mean the company laptop. Do not use this rule as an excuse to bring your work with you. If at all possible, leave every thought of work behind when you travel. Though it might seem awkward at first, pencil and paper work fine for taking notes.

Two crucial things to think about packing are Pepto-Bismol, in case you eat something which doesn’t agree with you, and hand sanitizer; the kind that works without water. A word of advice from personal experience, no matter what situation you find yourself of, don't let the sanitizer replace taking a shower.

When you are setting off to Charleston, you and your family need to carry lots of everything you need for picture taking. If you are old-fashioned and still use regular film, consider stepping up to a digital camera. Nothing is more disappointing to me than when I get back from a trip and discover that some of the pictures didn't turn out. With a digital camera, I can see what I am taking as I go along. The only things I need are batteries and memory space. Now that you can get a fantastic digital camera for under $200, the excuses you have are dwindling away. Several tourist sites have camera stores that will transfer your photos from your memory card to a CD, which will open up the door for you to snap even more photos to torment friends and family with when you come home.

I cannot stress enough the value in keeping things easy. Prepare yourself wisely by taking care of as much as you can in advance. When planning to travel, remember, the internet is your ally. Pack, plan, and keep entertainment basic to help ensure that your vacation to Charleston is a relaxing and memorable one. I hope that these words of advice will prove applicable to you as you prepare yourself to start on your adventure.
