Turbine Technician: Precisely What Does This Job Entail?

by Roger Brown

The job of wind turbine technician can be a fascinating one if you enjoy mechanical subsystems. Don't kid yourself though if you're not mechanically minded and don't enjoy this type of thing…learning a new career and making a lot of money at it will still not be enough to make your life fulfilling.

The fact that fossil fuel supplies are disappearing is a strong motivator for many utilities and many homeowners to look seriously at wind power and what they can do to ease the transition from fossil fuels into an age where we get most of our power from the wind or, from the sun.

This is very good news for the wind turbine technician. This is a job that pays very well. Wind turbine technicians can make over $80,000 a year right out of school. With very little training you can make probably double what you can make regardless of what other mechanical system you might be working on now.

The reason for the high pay is that the job is somewhat dangerous. However, this is good news if you really carefully assess what the actual risk is and are not be frightened by the potential risk.

These are the characteristics of the wind turbine technician position and what you need to evaluate in order to decide if you want to pursue this is a career…

The number one thing that distinguishes this type of job and the other is the itinerant nature of the position. The reason you are in so much demand as a wind turbine technician is because you know how to work on a very complicated piece of machinery that most people don't understand. And, most of these wind turbines are in certain parts of the country right now where wind is very strong.

So, it's going to be difficult make money in wind energy jobs in a state like Florida, for example. There just aren't that many wind turbines in Florida right now. So, you will have to go to a state where there are a lot of wind turbines like Texas or Oklahoma.

The other big thing you need to keep in mind is that these wind turbines are up high. Sometimes, these wind devices can be at least 200 feet in the air and you're going to have to work up that high to work on them.

The job of wind turbine technician is multifaceted. It is really like a glorified mechanics job that happens be high up in the atmosphere and requires a lot of travel. So if you like that sort of thing wind turbine technician positions will pay you a lot more than working on another mechanical system like a car, for example.
