Medical Coding Jobs

Medical Coder

by C. Dunn

Medical coding is essentially the process of applying formal, standardized medical codes to the records of medical patients. Diagnostic and procedural information is converted by medical coders into simplified numerical codes that can be electronically processed for payment by third party payers Insurance companies and Medicare, for example.

Medical coding is a highly regulated and closely supervised activity. It's also subject to frequent and rigorous audits to ensure accuracy in the medical billing process as there are literally billions of dollars at stake. In a lot of ways, medical coding is much more scrutinized than medical transcription.

As a result, the certification requirements are greater for those who are going into a medical coding career compared to many other career fields. Before you can enter any medical coding profession you are generally required to get entry level or advanced medical certification.

Here are the 2 national organizations that do medical coder certification:

AHIMA American Health Information Management Association

AAPC American Association of Professional Coders

Right now the majority of medical coding work is still performed by medical coders working in clinics or hospitals. These medical coders work in a professional environment and perform vital behind the scenes billing support activity.

There's a movement toward outsourcing of medical coding work to 3rd party vendors. As this trend catches on, more medical coding work will be done in homes and medical coding will evolve to become more of a home based career much like medical transcription is today. It's said that as technology keeps evolving and remote medical coding platforms are developed, the outsourcing model will begin to take hold in the industry. However, right now it is important to let it be known that most medical coding is still performed in hospitals and clinics.
