Permission to Eat More Fat ?

by Derek Frazier, cPT

Is the new OTC medication, alli, the breakthrough weight loss tool of the century or is it just another scam designed to get more people to feed into the $100 billion a year industry? There are millions of Americans overweight or obese, accounting for over 60 percent of the U.S. population, reports the Department of Health and Human Resources. There is a great problem with the state of health of the population, but is alli just another supposedly magic pill that will fatten the wallets of Glaxo, Smith-Kline and its shareholders? The market for obesity remedies including diet pills and powders that are supposed to make you lose weight, are becoming favorites of dieters. As a fitness professional, I see them as both a quick emotional fix to the large inactivity problem and also a great money maker for the big pharmaceutical companies that think of these great ideas. Let’s face it, they have all the money they need to market the product and make the high hopes consumer buy it. Ladies picture your body on a dart board in the executive meetings of the drug companies, they are preying on you.Alli, the recently FDA approved medication designed to block fat from absorption in your body, seems to have no real use but to allow the chronic fat eater a short term solution. Seriously, can you actually consider yourself taking a ridiculous medication like this for the rest of your life? And does it offer the healthy individual capable of exercise a reason to indulge in fattening foods and forestall exercise practices even further? What a mistake you will make if you are going to put this into your body without first trying your best to use what nature has given you to burn the fat like: legs, arms and a strong back! Studies have shown that this drug works, it wouldn’t be on the market if it didn’t help in some way, and it certainly wouldn’t be approved by the FDA if there were no promising effects that can be reaped by people that need them. The key word here is need. Doctors would not give this to anyone unless they were seriously obese, now its OTC.While these results may be true, they often have side effects and will do you more harm than good. Don’t take alli and think that you can cheat your body by eating more fattening foods thinking you’re not going to absorb them. I think you will be sorely mistaken as the side effects clearly state the frequent bowel movements associated with the medicine. This medicine should not be used as a replacement for regular activity and exercise and is, in most cases, worthless to the consumer. It is an expensive option to the growing problem of weight gain. Eating the same amount of fat and having some not be absorbed does not mean that you will burn fat already in your body’s system more readily. Also, don’t think because the medicine is transporting fat to your bowels without absorption that you can eat more fat and you won’t get fatter. You will get fatter, and then you will probably try to use a low fat diet and be upset even further due to your storage of carbohydrates as fat. And just in case you didn’t read the studies, you should know that a significant amount of subjects regained their weight after taking themselves off the medication. You can’t win, and you won’t as long as you refuse to accept your need for exercise or activity at the least.I’m reminding all of you that you will still be able to store carbohydrates as fat. Carbohydrates that are not needed by your body for immediate fuel can easily be transported to fat storage for later use, should that later use come…The best way to learn how to burn fat is to follow a fitness professional’s advice regarding a new fitness plan. No plan is complete without a modest diet and supplementation if needed. All workouts will not work, there are specific exercises that we use to cause fat loss and keep it off for good. Instead of buying the OTC fat blocker, alli, why don’t you drop the quick fixes with side effects and get on a real plan, with real results that are proven from countless studies, like one that can be developed for you by a proven fitness professional. Even if there was an honest medicine that would prove exercise insufficient, barbaric and obsolete I would still choose exercise for the aesthetic value and the sense of completeness it brings to me. I also get some of my best ideas and thoughts when exercising.
