First, consider the texture you desire in your background. In such a case, a background in a solid color is generally a good option. Keep in mind; it's generally easier on the eyes to read darker text off a lighter background. If your goal is to highlight a special photo on the front of the postcard, consider complementary or analogous colors. Complementary colors are colors that are opposites on a color wheel. One example would be red and green. Another would be orange and purple. If you wish to make your photo stand out from the postcard background, select the complementary color to the dominant color within the image. Alternatively, analogous colors are those adjacent to each other on the color wheel (for example, yellow and green or blue and purple). If you are utilizing a photo that has a lot of green within it, a background containing yellow is an analogous option.
