Bleacher Styles and Uses

by Michelle Lee

Just about any sporting event or concert that you attend, you'll be sitting on some type of bleachers. Whether they are portable bleachers or permanent, you are going to find quite a variety. A game or concert can last a few hours, so comfort is a very important factor. Unfortunately not all of them are as comfortable as we would like them to be. The seating on bleachers are very important. There are ones with built in chairs so that each person has their own spot while others are bench seating. Benches are the most commonly used because it allows for the most amounts of people. More tickets can be sold to the events - the only problem is that many times everyone is crammed onto the bench, not allowing for much comfort. The construction of the bleachers is also critical. There is aluminum and plastic. The plastic has the ability to fade or crack in the heat of the sun, however they won't get as hot as the aluminum. There are also wood bleachers that don't move - these can be comfortable and won't get hot, but if they aren't maintained, splinters can be more unbearable than the hot aluminum. Portable bleachers are a popular choice for golf courses, community parks and anywhere else that may involve a crowd only on occasion. These can be delivered and set up within a few hours, giving you the elevation needed so that everyone has a great view. They break down and can be out of the area in a quick amount of time so that they aren't always in the way. Retractable bleachers are becoming quite common in schools and universities because the floor space is so limited. Retractable bleachers will go flat against the side of a wall and then, with the push of a button, the bleachers will come out and extend into the arena floor. If there is a basketball game on one day and prom on the next, these bleachers can come in handy. Low-rise bleachers have been beneficial when you don't have to worry about height being an issue. These are also relatively safe because the highest level isn't more than a few feet off of the ground. Children's events utilize low-rise bleachers all the time because a few rows can be utilized, giving everyone a great view of a play or other event and be comfortable for everyone. Bleachers don't have to be tall in order to seat a bunch of people. There are non-elevated bleachers that simply provide row after row of benches for people to sit down. When you look at graduations in outdoor settings or even some weddings, these bleachers are used because the view isn't going to be obstructed because there is a stage or podium that will have everyone's attention. When the event is ground level and you have a bunch of adults, the elevated bleachers are typically going to be used. This ensures that everyone has the same fair view of what is going on because each row goes up another height. With elevated bleachers, you never have to worry about someone taller sitting in front of you because you get the bonus of being an entire step taller than them.
