Don't Fail to Prepare

by Martin Sejas

Preparation is very important if you are planning to do something and construction is no exception. As part of planning, a construction site needs to be well planned so that those who will be working at the site know exactly where to find the tools, equipments and materials for use. As part of planning a construction, having a Quality Control System is of utmost importance. Having such a system in place not only ensures that the construction work proceeds well as planned and completed within a determined period but ensures that workers carry out their work with very minimal interruption. With workers knowing where to find materials for use, a lot of time is saved, meaning that a day's work is completed as planned.

One of the very essential issues that a Quality Control System at a construction site addresses is employees affairs and in specific, the health of employees. Although this is normally ignored by some construction companies, it is one of the issues that determine whether a construction project will be completed in time or not. It is no wonder then, that different jurisdictions have enacted laws and regulations relating to Occupational Safety and Health. Construction sites present different dangers to workers, risks that can only be resolved and addressed through a perfectly planned Quality Control System. It is common for law enforcement officers to pay scheduled and unscheduled visits to construction sites to ascertain whether safety of workers is assured or not. In addition, they check whether there is a Quality Control System in place or not.

A properly planned Quality Control System at a construction site should provide a mechanism of addressing not only issues pertaining to the construction but the apparent risks as well. It should determine all the possible risks and show a clear instruction of minimizing them. In addition, it should provide for solutions. Such solutions should be by way of minimizing or eliminating the risks all together. It is certain that even with a properly planned Quality Control System in place, the occurrence of a risk cannot be ruled out. The Quality Control System should give a guideline on what is to be performed in case of an eventuality and show the person who should take charge.

The dangers and risks at a construction site are bound to change with time as the construction proceeds towards its completion. A properly planned Quality Control System should be able to take this into account and be able to accommodate any changes. Some risks that may have not there will come up and others will be no more. The essential part of a Quality Control System depends in its ability to give instruction in assisting an injured employee who has received treatment and ready to return to work. The system should show how such a worker needs to be assessed and the worker only accepted back to work upon ascertaining that he/she is in pre-injury state. In the event that the concerned worker has been disabled in any way, the system should provide for a compensation mechanism.

No employee would like to assist injuries at a construction area and all employees will strive to allow their work are as safe as possible. For this reason, it is essential to acknowledge them on the Quality Control System regarding to their welfare at the work area. Doing this will make them feel cared for and part of the system. They will not only know from where to obtain materials for use but also know what to do and who to approach in case of an eventuality.
