What You Should Ask Before Choosing A Fertility Center

by Krystle Hooper

If you're a couple dealing with fertility issues, choosing a good fertility center can make for a life changing event. Few issues in life are as fraught with emotion, contain as many hurdles or affect as many facets of life as does fertility issues for couples.

Finding the right fertility center involves much more than just evaluating the fertility center's success rates. While the stats are important, even a center with high success rates may not be the right one for you. In order to find the right fertility center for you, you will need to ask a lot of questions and they should include these questions that get into all the difficulties of fertility treatments.

1. What are the success rates with people facing similar issues and age? 2. What is their treatment philosophy (both the doctor's and the fertility centers)? 3. What types of treatments do you offer? 4. Are the doctors at the center trained and certified in the subspecialties of infertility and fertility endocrinology? 5. Are the doctors board certified? 6. Does the center have to report to SART (Society for Assisted Reproductive Therapies) and the CDC (Center for Disease Control)? 7. Without concern for cost, what treatment would be most effective in your situation? 8. Based on your financial situation, which treatment plans would be best to give you the most opportunities to conceive? 9. Would taking a particular course of treatment make it impossible to take another course of treatment later? 10. What types of insurance do you accept and do they have experience in dealing with that insurance plan? 1 1. What costs are not included in the price of treatment? 12. Are there procedures, treatments or medications that may be necessary but won't be included in the quoted price of any treatments? 13. Are medications covered in the price of treatment? 14. Is there anything I can do to offset the cost? 15. How often will I be billed? 16. How physically demanding is the treatment? 17. How often do we need to come in to the clinic and how long do treatments take? 18. Is it possible to schedule appointments around work and other schedules? 19. Is the clinic open daily? 20. Are the doctors and nurses the same ones I'll see each visit? 21. What is your process for resolving conflicts and dealing with concerns? 22. What type of support do you offer?

Choosing a fertility center is a pivotal part in the fertility process. Asking good questions will help you find a center that meets your expectations as well as one where you are proud to include in your conception story for years to come.
