Young Drivers Taking ‘Selfies’ Behind the Wheel

by Christopher Keiner

Drivers nowadays have tons of ways on being imaginative when it comes to finding things to do while behind the wheel. It could be reading, texting, eating and many more.

Because of the new technologies that have emerged on this day, many drivers are inspired in taking ‘selfies’ or self-portrait with their smartphone cameras while in motion.

It may look like unordinary but these people making ‘selfies’ are not self-conscious about sharing their pictures in social media.

Some of the photos or videos shot are not just the drivers themselves but their passengers as well. Not surprisingly, highway safety advocates are not thrilled.

But taking a photo of yourself while you are driving could put your life in danger and putting the lives of those around you in danger too. This trend is not only limited to cars. There are also people who take self-portrait of them while driving motorcycles, boats and even planes.

People on the Government, law enforcement and safety groups have been stressing hard to raise awareness about distracted driving, with texting collecting the most attention.

If a driver is caught taking photos of themselves while driving, they could receive a ticket. It is illegal under many state laws to use a phone while behind the wheel unless otherwise it is tethered to Bluetooth or in a hands-free system.

There are more than 3,300 deaths yearly caused by distracted driving. That is why taking a photo or reading a text might take only a split second but when a car is in motion that is enough time to cause a serious accident, according to safety experts.

People taking photos appear to be mostly teenagers and young adults. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that teens are the target of the most recent distracted-driving push. According to them, car accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers. Speeding, driving under the influence of liquor and not wearing safety seat belts are major f actors but distracted driving played a part in 12% of the critical crashes.
