It stretches all the way from Castro on Chile's south coast to Lund just north of Powell River in British Columbia Canada. For some historical information on Powell River BC visit http:///www.sunshinecoast-bc.com/powellriver.html. The town has some really unique history. To reach the southern most area is a short ferry ride from West Vancouver BC, 45 minutes in length and you would think of the area as an island, but in fact it is part of the mainland, it just lacks road access due to the steep mountainous terrain on the southern portion of the coast.
The Sunshine Coast is a truly magnificent stretch of highway, funky little towns and villages are sure to please as you wind your way through some of the most magnificent west coast scenery to be found anywhere. Majestic mountains, old growth forest and pristine beaches will delight visitors to the area. Wild life is abundant here, you will enjoy viewing bald eagles, harbour seals, and the famous west coast orcas can be seen at certain times of the year.
Salt and fresh water fishing is abundant. You can catch trout, salmon, cod and many other species of fish. For the shellfish lover, crab, prawns, oysters, & clams are sure to please. There are local charter companies to deliver you a wonderful west coast fishing experience in the various communities if you arrive without any gear or boat.
The climate here is mild, and enjoys less rain than Vancouver BC. It is protected by the mountainous regions of Vancouver Island and hence the name "Sunshine Coast". The communities are rich in history; museums are plenty to dig up some historical information on each of the areas. Gibsons Landing is famous for the location of the filming of the Beachcombers TV Series, for more information about Gibsons and some pictures of Molly's Reach visit http://www.sunshinecoast-bc.com/gibsons.html
There are over 20 British Columbia Provincial Parks designated through out the area, this is an indication of the true beauty you will find here. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, snow shoeing, waters ports including wind surfing, water skiing and a dip in the salt chuck! Festivals and events are plenty in all of the communities and some of them are an absolute site for the eyes. The Higgeldy Piggeldy Parade, and annual event in Roberts Creek BC is a truly eclectic experience that you simply have to see.
There are more artists per capita on the Sunshine Coast than anywhere else in BC. This gives you some idea of the quality and diversity you will find when browsing local shops for artisan treasures. If you are planning a visit to British Columbia, you simply must visit the Sunshine Coast.
