Possibly the best thing you can do at the time being is to leave your partner for a few days. This is important because it will actually help you distance yourself from your partner - both emotionally and physically. The best outcome would also be that your partner might discover the real intention of your disappearance so that they will be prepared for the worst i.e. you want to break up with them.
You should also take this time to think of reasons why you want to break up with your partner. This step is important because it gives you the opportunity to evaluate your feelings towards them. When it is the time for you to break up with your partner, you will find that it is a lot easier to answer their questions since you have done this little exercise.
Technology has of course made it a lot easier for us to take the coward's way out by e-mailing or texting our partner to tell them of our intention to break up with them. Still, you should do the honourable thing and at least have the decency to break up with your partner face to face. You owe them that much since you obviously shared a past and history together.
Once you have told them that it is entirely your decision to break up and you are firm about it, do not back down if they plead. The most important thing would be to keep your distance away from your ex-partner at this point.
