Hydrogen Powered Vehicles are the Future- StudentScholarships.org
StudentScholarships.org - Hydrogen Powered Vehicles
There is an abundance of hydrogen on our planet, but to be able to use the fuel cell concept, in vehicles as a power source, it needs to be pure hydrogen. Pure hydrogen does not happen naturally, it must be harvested by employing a chemical or electrical process. At the moment, the most inexpensive way to yield hydrogen is thru re-forming natural gas, which could be nearly as cheap as energy produced using gasoline.
Having vehicles that run on hydrogen would give a number of environmental and engineering advantages. Hydrogen technology could help to diversify energy sources, reduce green house gas, improve air quality, diversify energy supply, and reduce noise. Fuel cells also avoid the environmental damage associated with the extraction of fossil fuels from the Earth when the hydrogen is produced from renewable sources.
If a hydrogen spill occurred, it would evaporate instantly, because hydrogen is lighter than air, leaving only water behind. This is a dramatic departure from the legacy that oil drilling, transportation, refining, and waste products have left on the face of the Earth.
Second, there would be no need to incorporate an on-board module, which would simplify the design of the fuel cell system and lead to greater energy efficiency locally.
A fuel cell operates just like a battery, but does not run down or require recharging. Hence, no dead batteries piling up in landfills or pollution-causing gas-guzzling combustion engines. It will produce energy in the form of electricity and heat as long as fuel is supplied. When hydrogen is used as an energy source in a fuel cell, the only emission that is created is water, which can then be electrolyzed to make more hydrogen - the waste product supplies more fuel.
This remarkable invention can be used now and in the future. In the short term, hydrogen could be used in urban vehicles, which would reduce emission in city centers. Long term, it could be used in combined heat/power generation, in industry and in every form of transport: ships, trains, and airplanes. Hydrogen made from renewable energy resources provides a clean and abundant energy source, capable of meeting most of the future's high-energy needs.
