Other People's Choice to be Miserable

by Susan Russo

"We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same." -Carlos Castenada

We make hundreds of choices a day. Such as your everyday choices, i.e. What to eat, what to wear, what to say, what to do and on and on. Then you have the more monumental choices. Should I stay or should I go, do I approach a co-worker or boss, do I quit my job, should I continue to put up with someone's constant barrage of negative comments, do I hire or fire someone etc.

But, the single most important choice you will make in your day is; your attitude and how you choose to approach life. We all have situations that arise that are out of our control and we deal with them to the best of our ability. But there is one that if confronted with on a consistent basis can leave you dragged down and feeling worn out, namely another person's negative attitude!

And, unless you are a miracle worker, there isn't much you can do to change it. The only thing you do have control over is your attitude and how you choose to live your life.

Other people's attitude, demeanor, negativity, insecurities, inability to take responsibility, etc. all have an effect on your life if you let it.

When you find yourself face to face with someone who just can't seem to get a grip on being happy or worse yet who is hell bent on making everyone around them unhappy, what do you do?

The obvious choice is to remove yourself from the situation, but sometimes that isn't possible. If you are married to this kind of person, or you work with them daily it's tough to run and hide. But, if you can remove these toxic people from your life, it is in your best interest to do so. (Keep in mind that you first give it your best shot to talk with them about it before choosing to walk away.)

The sad thing is that they typically have no clue how they adversely impact others lives and how other people view them. After all it's everyone's fault but their own. And, they never do anything wrong. As a matter of fact they will flip the script and say, "I'm so nice and everyone else is so wrong."

You can't reason with these people because they will never face the truth about themselves. It's always something or someone else that causes their misery or their upset. They typically take everything you say personally and they don't have a sense of humor.

What is sad is that these people may have their good points, but the stench that arises from their rotten attitude and a miserable outlook on life permeates everything they do and say.

What's even sadder is that they don't have to live like this but you can't help those who won't even acknowledge they have issues.

When you are around people who choose to be miserable you can't take their attitude personally. You can't allow them to undermine your happy attitude and bring you down. In this world where it's sometimes a struggle to keep a positive outlook, being around negative people can suck the joy out of life.

You really do have to make a choice as to whether or not you are going to continue to let this person infect your life or if you are going to cut out the dis-ease and try and surround yourself with people who have a like minded approach towards life.

We all have the choice to live our best life right now. Everyday can be a blessing if you let it, if you approach it as such. Choose love, laughter and an easy, fun outlook on life. Life is so long why live it being miserable?

Then God, (or what you believe God to be), that it's not you that lives in darkness and sadness. Because the truth is that these kinds of people really don't like themselves and they take it out on the world and everyone around them.

Pray that their minds are renewed with harmony, peace and a new outlook that will bring them to a higher level of living. And start each day, knowing that it's going to be a great one no matter what you find, no matter what arises because it all boils down to one thing, your attitude towards life!
