Meeting a new person for the first time can be daunting. Some of us are natural conversationalists for others free flowing chat comes less easily, yet we always want to create a good impression of ourselves.

Whether it's a first date, with a new work colleague or a stranger at a bus stop, there are certain topics of conversation that can be relied upon to get people talking, allowing you to establish a rapport, get a better impression of each other and build a bond.

So, once the pleasantries are over, here are some ideas to spark a good chin-wag:

Hobbies

People feel most comfortable talking about the things that they know about. Conversing about hobbies is an ideal way to put people in their comfort zone, encouraging them to discuss something they feel passionate about and allowing them to express themselves openly.

This topic of conversations should also help you establish shared interests or viewpoints. Maybe you partake in a similar activity, have travelled to the same part of the world, or enjoy watching the same TV programme?

Up-bringing

Many people have incredibly vivid memories of their childhood, it is the period of one's life that most influences the person that they are today. This topic allows comparisons and contrasts to be drawn between the nurturing of the people in the conversation.

You may choose to reminisce over specific events of your youth. School days are often a good source of memories for people of any age and individuals will chat about their education and the experiences they had when sat behind childrens desks as they were schooled. People look back fondly on the fun times they had in previous years too, whether it was playing with handmade wooden toys, sporting achievements or adventures with their friends and families.

Current Affairs

Current affairs are always evolving, which is why they are a good topic of conversation when you are getting to know a fellow human being. No matter how long you may know the person this topic of conversation should remain fresh as you won't exhaust each other's personal memories. It also allows you to ascertain more about the individual you are talking to as they are likely to espouse points of view which might highlight their outlook towards life in general or steer the conversation in the direction of events that they are more interested in, allowing you to gather more information about that facet of their personality.
