Steps To Choosing The Correct Bullet Proof Vests
Most people know a bullet proof vest as a piece of the protective clothing that the military and police officers wear. The reality is it is used everywhere in most industries around the world, mostly its dependant on the location and the chance of a certain type of attack. Most people don't actually know what protection they need. Here is a quick guide so you can better decide on what bullet proof vest you need.
Steps to making yourself bullet proof
To start with you will need to understand three protection types;
• Spike Protection - This type of protection will deflect spike shaped weapons or items from penetrating the body. Such as screw drivers, spikes on walls or gates or anything spike shaped.
• Stab Protection - This protection type will protect the body against stab attacks and knife shaped objects. This might include knifes, blades, stanley knifes etc.
• Ballistic Protection - This type of protection protects against projectiles and bullets. Bullet proof vests dependant on the protection level will protect against Handguns, Rifles, even armour piercing rounds.
Most of the controversy that gets created about how efficient bullet proof vests are, often gets created because the wearers buying the vests don't purchase the correct protection level. The protection level is so important when choosing the correct bullet proof vest for you. Here is an overview guide of the protections levels and what range of weaponry they are made to protect you from. For the full guide see http://www.justnet.org/pages/BallisticCPL.aspx.
Ballistic Protection Levels
Soft body armor made from Dupont Kevlar material® (Handguns) Most soft armor will protect against 9MM handguns and dependant on the type, different velocity magnums with (based on the protection level) varying types of ammo. This is what they have been tested with. This is not fool proof and should only ever be used as guide.
• Type II - Will protect you against 9MM and .40 S&W.
• Type IIA - Will protect against 9MM, .40 S&W and the .357 Magnum.
• Type IIIA - Will protect against 9MM, .40 S&W, .357 Magnums and the .44 Magnum.
Hard armor made from Alumina Ceramic plates (Handgun & Rifles) Hard Armor is mostly used when you need protection from higher velocity weaponry including and mainly centred on rifle protection. All bullet proof vests are sub scalable, they protect against all the same weapons and ammos the level down protects against without mention. For armor piercing rounds choose the highest level of protection Type IV.
• Type III - Will protect against 9MM, .40 S&W, .357 Magnums and the .44 Magnum, and 7.62 mm FMJ (M80).
• Type IV - Will protect against 9MM .40 S&W, .357 Magnums and the .44 Magnum, 7.62 mm FMJ (M80) and .30 Calibre armor piercing rounds.
Always be very cautious of what you're buying. The last thing you want is to be inadequately protected when it really matters.
