Get Floored
My knowledge about flooring was next to zero up until that fateful day I came home to a muddy swimming pool of a flat. It was barely two weeks since I moved into my “newly refurnished unit” – as my landlord claimed – and the place was already screaming “move out!”
On my first week I noticed that the kitchen sink was leaking. Fortunately there was a plumber next door who offered to help out for free. As a bonus he looked every bit the quintessential hot plumber from a steamy adult video. When I thought my pipes were all good – no pun intended, forget the hot plumber neighbor bit – all the faucet fixtures in my bathroom gave out. And just like that I had an instant mini pool for a house, much to the demise of the walls and flooring NJ apartment.
The walls dried up in no time and showed but little sign of damage though the flooring looked beyond repair. I thought of having some pro interior designer redo a bamboo flooring installation as the place had some eco-friendly theme going on. My landlord, perhaps not wanting to lose face offered to pay for reinstallation and even gave me the option to choose what floors I wanted; though he was bent on vinyl tile flooring as it was the most cost-efficient and the easiest to install.
Disregarding my landlord’s recommendation, I did my homework and researched about creative flooring ideas. Below are a few unique floor styles that would spruce up any home.
• Instead of having ceramic tile installation, try the traditional parquet method. Make your parquet floor resemble the commonly used tiles by alternating maple and walnut hardwood strips. The meticulous process would take pretty long time but the end result (read: high-end) would be worth the hard work.
• Personalize your flooring by painting it yourself. Remove the varnish from the wooden surface, smoothen it up then apply an oil-based primer before you start doodling away.
• Budget conscious? Go for stained concrete. It gives off an instant modern look to any room and is relatively easy to maintain compared to other types of flooring that need constant polishing or waxing.
• Tired of laminate tile flooring for your bathroom? Go for a classic, elegant theme by using marble and granite to create patterned flooring. All you’ll need is someone to draw you a bath to feel no less like a princess.
• I have to give credit to my landlord; vinyl flooring for the kitchen is rather fuss free. Give life to vinyl by splashing on specialized paint, preferable in vibrant colors.
