A Call for a Cell Phone Directory

by Steve Smith

True, there are really advanced cell phones out in the market but what manufacturers and cell phone service providers do not know is that people are clamoring for cell phone directory assistance.

If landline phone services have their directory listings, how come mobile phones do not have a cell phone directory assistance that people can call whenever they need to know a person's mobile phone number or an establishment's cell phone number? The fact that billions of people all over the world now have cell phones should be more than enough for mobile phone service providers to set up their cell phone directory. If it would be hard to set up one cell phone directory for all users, why not set up one cell phone directory each dependent on the service provider?

Experts say that the reason why a cell phone directory hasn't been put up is because of privacy concerns; after all, people would not want to get hundreds of telemarketing calls and spam messages on their cell phones as a lot of companies resort to telemarketing and spam in order to promote their products and services so publishing your mobile phone number would not be a good idea.

Some mobile phone service providers still think having a cell phone directory is vital and so companies such as Alltel, Cingular, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Nextel have decided to start Wireless Directory Assistance LLC, which is a compiled national database which 411 operators can access in order to find cell phone numbers. People will be the ones to decide whether they would want their mobile phone numbers listed in the cell phone directory or not. This cell phone directory hasn't been launched yet but take note that Verizon, the company with 40 million users will not be participating in the said plan. Verizon has even talked to their subscribers not to allow being listed in the upcoming cell phone directory.

It is a fact though that if there are no wireless phone directories in the United States, there are cell phone directories in countries like Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Denmark and the people there have had their cell phone numbers listed without second thoughts. People in the United States actually need not worry about being called by telemarketers if their mobile phones are listed in the cell phone directory because of the Do Not Call registry and the fact that it is now considered illegal to make telemarketing calls to mobile phone numbers.
