What to do when you spill a gallon of milk in the car?

by Martin Meyer

Many times I have been asked, “Can I get spoiled milk odor out of my car?” The answer is a conditional yes. Why is it conditional? It’s conditional because if you cannot get to where the milk has migrated, the odor will not be eliminated.

Ok, what am I talking about?

What I am talking about is this; the expectation that spraying a little something on the surface will fix a milk spill. After several failed attempts to remedy or remove the problem the milk has been spread around the car and can be in some very unexpected places. If these areas are not treated, you will be less than successful because the odor is coming from areas that are not where you expect them to be and are not treating.

When the spill is on a seat, especially fabric, and you wet the area, the milk residue penetrates deeper into the cushion.

This is not to say that the odor is not going to respond to odor control efforts, it simply means that the easy cleaning and treating methods are not likely to work the first time.

The easy way to solve the milk spill is to take immediate action to remove the bulk of the milk before it spoils. This could include finding the nearest self-service car wash with the industrial vacuum cleaners and vacuum out as much of the milk as you can. After the initial cleaning, add enough water to wet the area, and re-vacuum. Repeating this step several times will allow you to remove as much of the milk as possible.

If you have OdorXit on hand, mix up a quart of solution (1 ounce of OdorXit and 30 ounces of water) and pour it on the wet carpet or seat. Allow it to dry overnight and the odor will never develop.

If you do not have OdorXit on hand, get some, there is no substitute! It may take more than one application to remove all of the odor, especially from cushions.
