How to Create a Small Business Network

by Lloyd Ross

Introduction
The art of network creation is one that has been gradually demystified as the years have gone by. A few years ago, a person that was capable of creating and maintaining a network was rare to find and because of that these people were paid lots of money and given free training in order to be able to perform those duties. Nowadays, not only are these people all over the place, but they work for both small and large businesses alike. In today's world where not just businesses but individuals have the ability to create networks in their own house, the art of network creation is something that is well known to many people. If you are looking to create a small business network, here are the components that you need.
Type of Network
Before you do anything else, you need to determine what type of network connectivity you want to have. There are two types of connectivity available; wireless and wired.
Wired connectivity is where you actually connect all of the different components of the network together with wires. The advantages of this type of connectivity are that not only is it cheaper to do, but at the same time it also tends to be more difficult to break the connection when it is running through a solid line. On the other hand, if the components need to be connected through wires, then you are going to need a lot of routers or alternatively a large amount of wire in order to connect all the pieces of the network together. This can be difficult to do if the different computers are spread out over a large geographical distance.
Wireless connectivity on the other hand does not have those bounds. Because the connection is made thorough signal transmission rather than through wired transmission, there is a lot of flexibility in setting up the different parts of the network. On the other hand, wireless technology of a similar level is always going to be more expensive than wired technology and can be more temperamental in terms of cutting out at times.
Network Components
Once you have chosen between wireless and wired connections, it is time to start building your network. What you need first and foremost is access to the internet. This is gained through the use of a modem or a hub and the signal is retrieved from an ISP (or alternatively one's own server technology could be used). Once the signal is there, then it is dispersed to the different parts of the network through the use of routers. Routers are small machines that are able to "route" the signals through to the network components that need them in order to be able to utilize the full resourced of the network.
Once the hubs and routers have been set up, then you can start adding the end-user instruments to the network. These include desktops, laptops, PDAs, cell phones and any other user instrument you can think of. The whole point of a network is to make it more efficient to share and access shared information from different computers that are part of the same company and if you follow this construction plan, you'll definitely reach that goal.
