Anyone who has any link to cannabis or cannabis seeds will soon tell you that one of the most fun parts of collecting cannabis seeds is all the amazing names they have. Super Silver something or Cheesy Ultra Skunk or Hooper's Delight Number 8. Names like these make the thrill of collecting all the more thrilling and mean brand new seeds are almost as hotly anticipated for their names as they are their properties.

So where do they come up with these name? Are they just randomly plucked out of the air in a smoke infused vision or are they carefully marketed, tested and head-scratched over?

Breeders Names

One of the more common ways cannabis seeds are name is after the breeder of the seeds. For example, Mr Nice is the pseudonym of legendary cannabis seed entrepreneur Howard Marks and for this reason has been taken as the name for a series of strains partly developed by him. You may also come across names, or parts of names of cannabis seeds which include 'Arjen' or 'Neville'. These are the names of two supposed 'Kings of Cannabis' that have a particularly highly regarded reputation in the marijuana community.

Old Coffee Shops

As you probably know there is a long and historic tradition in the Netherlands of relaxed attitudes to drugs, and as a result some cannabis friendly coffee shops have been around for a very long time. 'The Bulldog' for example has been around since the 1970's after its owner dumped the contents of his father's sex shop in the canal and used the empty building to start one of the first ever cannabis friendly coffee shops. All these years later and 'The Bulldog' has hotels and merchandise in abundance, plus they also have their own strain of cannabis called 'Bulldog Seeds'.

Location

One final place where some strains get their names is from where they originate. You will easily spot names like 'Afghan' in some strains for genetics that began in Afghanistan and 'Himalaya' for strains that originated in Nepal.

Genetics

Cannabis Seeds names are also decided quite often based on the genetics of the seeds. Cheese is a long running strain, as is Kush and Haze which is where we get super silver haze in effect, and these names often pop up in strain names to signify that these classic strains have been spliced into the genetics of another. This is a sign that these strains in particular have such good qualities that whole new strains have been designed and built around them.

Aren't marijuana seeds interesting?
