How to stop a leak in a pipe

by Jakob Jelling

Learning how to stop a leak in a pipe can be very useful, not only when we actually need to fix a pipe but also before we do, since there are many chances we will have a leaking pipe sometime. Even if it is a temporary fix, knowing how to do it can be of great help, preventing further damage from happening until a professional can come and help us.

Many small leaks can be easily fixed with a pipe wrench on a threaded joint, although many other times this doesn't work or implies the help of a professional to be done correctly. However, if you have a small leak on a threaded pipe, the first thing you should try to do is to tighten it with a pipe wrench and then check if the leaking got fixed that way.

If the first option doesn't work, you should try with duct tape. You can apply several layers of duct tape where the leak is and then test again, if the leak continues, you should make sure you are working on the right spot since the problem might be in other part of the pipe.

If you need to fix a larger leak, you will need other materials and follow other kind of procedures. One of the best temporary solutions to stop a large leak in a pipe is with a piece of rubber hose; probably any old garden hose would be useful. You should cut a piece of the rubber hose, making sure it has a length longer than the hole you need to fix. Then, fit the hose wrapping the pipe and hold it in place with clamps.

It is important to be very careful while fixing a leak in a pipe, since some pipes (and especially the old ones) can be very fragile and therefore, while trying to solve the problem the leaking could become worse very easily. If you are not sure how to handle the situation properly, it is very advisable to call a professional before trying any home made solution.
