Your Smartphone Could Lead to Some Smart Money Savings!

by Timothy Frodsham

Money worries follow us all, from financial emergencies striking out of nowhere to worrying about unexpected events in the future and being prepared for them. This is why it makes it imperative to use every trick in the book to keep your finances balanced.

IPhones, Blackberries and Androids dominate the Smartphone market; in turn this has meant mobile internet is quickly evolving (some critics say evolving into something useful, finally)

So long as the network coverage holds up, we literally have the internet in the palm of our hand, and transport it in our pocket. With this new evolution, the move and expansion of online banking was only ever going to be the foundation of something more to come with the launch of mobile internet.

The app market is saturated with useful apps related to money and finance; it doesn't take long for an idea or market to open before there are hundreds or thousands of apps available to assist. We've found and listed some of the most useful below that will work on every Smartphone, not exclusive to any platform.

Mobile banking

It took a while, but RBS and NatWest are the first to have an app that allows secure balance enquiry checks from their Iphone. First Direct however are the first bank to develop an app that has a secure payment system, after customers began a campaign to get the bank to develop it. It goes without saying this is just the beginning as all the banks figure out ways to outdo each other in the app department.

Money managers

There is never less than a glut of money managers available to help keep your finances in check. No matter what area you need help on, there are many that cater to and are expert in niche areas, such as travel expenses or personal finance. The two groups who will be most helped by the use of a money manager are undoubtedly the so called 'road warriors' people who are constantly travelling and very rarely in the office, if they even have a office, or self employed persons who are more likely to be pressed for time as it is. There is only one downside, and that is the discipline to keep within the numbers and keep on top and track of them at the same time, master that and the savings will soon be beneficial.

0870

Saynoto0870.com has been one of the tip money saving websites on the net for a few years now, so an app version of this site was to be expected (though it's not the same people behind the website). Finding the British area code equivalent of the premium phone line, you will soon see the difference on your phone bill.

Suruk

Suruk is a Nokia only app at the present time, it allows you to input your local minicabs typical rates, so when it comes to paying the metre you know whether you are being overcharged or not. The one very slight downside is it was created for the Indian Market originally, show will show up only in Rupees, but as you have to input the cabs rates anyway, it's still the correct amount shown, only difference being it will show with the Rupee sign instead of £.

Meter Readings

With Meter Readings you can sync your electric, water and gas readings into one iPhone app and monitor how much your household is using at any point. It is unquestionably complex and will take a few tries to set up right, but once it is you can see what energy saving tips work in real time to bring your bills down. Most importantly of all, you will know when your energy company is taking the proverbial and overcharging (I'm looking at you NPower).

Barcode readers

This application is available over all makes and models, iPhones, Android's and Blackberry's (Oh my!). Simply point the camera lens on your phone at the barcode, it doesn't matter which shop you are in, and it will search to see if the same product is cheaper in a different store. This is the very definition of savings on the go!

The apps above are only the cornerstone of what's available to make quick money savings, with new apps coming out daily it's a good idea to keep an eye out. A couple of pounds spent on app could soon save you hundreds in the long run!
