Hypnotism - A Historical Approach

by Milos Pesic

The chronicle of hypnosis is as timeworn as the human nation. Even the most primeval savages were aware of this mind-blowing psychological manifestation, and it was used in the spiritual ceremonials of their prophets to produce apprehension and intensify conviction in the magic and the occult. With this far-reaching saga of supernaturalism and mysticism, it is not shocking that the conventional public attitude toward hypnosis has been and still is one of antagonism, misunderstanding and fear.

The initial scientific beginnings in the research of hypnosis began with Anton Mesmer in 1775, from whose name originates the expression mesmerism which is even today in modern use. Mesmer's utilization of hypnosis was made active with his breakthrough that certain types of medical patients responded to arm stroking and sleep suggestions. Mesmer attributed these sanative results to the 'quality' of 'animal magnetism', and he came up with a supposition that animal magnetism was some weird and peculiar cosmic fluid with remedial qualities.

Notwithstanding Mesmer's first-rate instinctive knowledge of clinical psychology, he had no bright perception of the psychological essence of his therapy. Nevertheless, he treated large numbers of patients effectively on whom traditional medical procedures had failed. However, his excessive behavior and strange character of his therapy brought him inevitably to disrespect despite the fact that lots of physicians visited his clinic throughout the peak of his achievement to come to know the important lessons in the strange art of psychotherapy, specifically, the significance of clinical psychology.

Since Mesmer there has been a succession of talented men who became interested in hypnosis and promoted it with success in medical practice, entrusting it an progressively more scientific groundwork and credibility. Elliotson, the first man in England to use the stethoscope, got interested in hypnosis about 1817, employed it substantially, and left brilliant manuscripts of its remedial effectiveness in selected cases. Esdaille, moved by Elliotson's case reports, became an eager advocate of mesmerism, as it was then referred to, and really succeeded in interesting the British government in founding a hospital in India, where he used it intensely on all categories of medical patients, leaving numerous superb evidence of major and minor surgery performed under hypnotic anesthesia.

The beginning of a psychological conception of the phenomenon began in 1841 with James Braid, at first an opposer and then thereafter a most devoted agent and supporter. It was he who composed the word hypnosis, acknowledged the psychological framework of hypnotic sleep, and defined a lot of its manifestations, forging methods whereby to assess their soundness.
