Packing For A Tropical Island Wedding in Key West, Florida

by Jack Terry

When attending a wedding away from home, it is important to pack far more clothes than you would normally take for what, in many cases, is just a short trip. There is the outfit you plan to wear to the wedding and reception, something else to wear if you are going to the rehearsal dinner, if they are also having the bachelor and bachelorette parties at the same time you will need an outfit for that, and then of course, some casual clothes to wear while at the hotel. If the destination wedding you are packing for is a tropical island wedding, perhaps one in Key West, Florida, the rules of packing may be the same, but the style of clothes you bring will be much different.

One of the main reasons for having a destination wedding is to create an experience that is out of the ordinary. Thanks to the number of churches and reception venues, it is possible to have a conventional ceremony and traditional reception in Key West. The expectation of something different is so great that couples who are having a formal event are typically smart enough to warn people ahead of time in the invite. If that happens to be the type of wedding you are packing for, remember that even if it is winter where you are from, the wool suit should stay at home. Temperatures cool off between December and March, but it is still the subtropics. Several hours in that heavy three piece suit will get uncomfortable.

Most of the tropical island weddings go for a style best known as casual elegance. This is the great time to try out a pair of linen pants with a silk shirt. It may seem strange to be without a jacket and tie for a wedding, but it will feel much stranger to seem so overdressed. People choose to visit Key West because of the relaxed island atmosphere, so it is best to pair your wardrobe accordingly.

Another important item to consider is the shoes you will be wearing. To many of the islanders, dressing up means putting on their fanciest flip flops or sandals. Certainly there are many styles of loafers that are designed to be worn for dressier occasions, but the greater concern is what you will be wearing the rest of the time. The easiest way to get around the historic Old Town section of Key West is by walking, so be sure the shoes and sandals you pack are comfortable, sturdy and already broken in. Everyone loves an opportunity to play "dress up" for a weekend. When the occasion is a destination wedding in the tropical wedding capitol of the country, Key West, Florida, it gives you a chance to really expand your wardrobe and put on the fanciest casual clothes you have.
