Summer Food and Health: EASY
Daily deal Website
You’ve done well. You knew summer was coming, you got ready. And now the two-piece fits! Awesome. But now to hold that exquisite shape through the season of sun, nightlife, parties and adventures.
10 simple tips can save the season, and your figure, as you navigate through the good times of another glorious summer.
1. On Vacation: Stay on track with food intake. Booking a room with a fridge and stove, or even a microwave, can pare down the budget and the calories if you prepare one or two meals per day yourself. (And when you do eat out, make sure you have a DailyDealTime unbeatable deal voucher! your wallet’s trying to hold in its waistline, too!)
2. Keep healthy foods and snacks on hand. Confucius say: “No fat in cupboard, no fat on hips.” Okay, I don’t think he really said that, but you see the logic: Just don’t buy it! Stock up on whole-grain crackers, raw veggies, and light snacks. If that’s what’s on hand, that’s what you’ll eat. Fresh fruit, hard-boiled eggs, canned olives, real cheese, all make great snacks.
3. Plan ahead, when you dine out. Go for the chicken, grilled. Have it in your mind what you can eat without packing on fat and empty calories. Before you even open the menu, you can be in control (the high-falutin’ word is “proactive”) of what you order.
4. When you barbeque, go skinless. Easy! And, roast some veggies on that grill. Vegetables are the BEST when grilled or roasted. (Need a cookbook? Check out “The Roasted Vegetable,” by Andrea Chesman. $6.96 from half.com. My favorite!)
5. Remember easy principles. Lamb is leaner than beef. Fish is better than ribs. And chicken is better than pork. Again, easy.
6. If it’s creamy, it’s bad. Well, not “bad,’ but probably not in line with your goal of holding your yummy figure all summer long. My mom says a light cream can be made with low-fat milk and a smidgen of flour. Salt and pepper it, and you won’t even miss Ranch to dip your veggies or (skinless) wings.
7. The sun is out. Get out there! WALK. Just 30 minutes per day will “engineer” your body to burn its fat away. Even better, hit the beach. And when you’re there, actually swim. A few strokes burns countless calories.
8. Amazingly yummy foods are generally better in their natural state. Case in point: Avocado = high in Omega-3 and other good stuff. Guacamole = sin. Simple as that.
9. Visit the Farmer’s Market. Weekly. ‘Tis the season, after all. Start a summer ritual. Virtually nothing you can buy at a Farmer’s Market can hurt you or your waistline. (That’s probably slightly overstated, but you get the idea.) And walking among the stalls, in the sunlight… well, that’s just more exercise and pure sunlight and Vitamin D to make you feel better and be truly healthier.
10. Splurge. Are you kidding? It’s summer! Have a big thick juicy burger! Enjoy it. Just don’t enjoy it every night. If you’re walking, and playing, and swimming, and getting sun this summer, that burger can’t dominate you. (Free DDT Advice: The best burgers are made from ground chuck, 80/20. Anything higher grade will not be as juicy or satisfying. … I feel a blog coming on, about how to make the perfect burger. Watch for it, coming soon.)
