Margaritaville… It's Time You Go

by Tamara Day

Oftentimes, when Americans think about a warm weather vacation, they think of Mexico, Hawaii, or the Caribbean. From my experience, they don't often consider Key West, Florida when determining their tropical destination point. In fact, more Europeans visit Key West each year than Americans do. I wonder why this is, when Key West has so very much to offer. Do we forget about the tiny island at the end of the Florida Keys which is the southernmost tip of our country… and which, incidentally, is also the only place in the United States to have never seen frost on the ground?

Key West is a tropical paradise. From the crystal clear azure waters, to the incredible sunsets (celebrated nightly in what is aptly coined the "Sunset Celebration"), to the amazing beachside hotels and restaurants, this place will soothe your soul and put you in "beach mode" almost immediately. Once you are settled in, have a fruity beverage in hand, and have enjoyed the sensation of the warm sand between your toes, what sort of adventures or excursions would you like to experience while you are on the island?

Key West is known for its sunsets and the elusive "green flash" that goes along with them just as the sun is completely setting. You can experience this from out on the water on a sunset cruise. The Wind and Wine Sunset Sail is a 2 ½ hour cruise that offers a selection of red and white wines, as well as champagne, for your cruising pleasure. For a more party-like atmosphere, check out the Commotion on the Ocean cruise. This cruise features live country artists, margaritas, beer, and appetizers.

During the day, there is nothing better than riding the sparkling waters of the Caribbean on a jet ski or WaveRunner. They can be rented by the hour, and the feel of the wind and saltwater on your face will leave you with a big grin like no other. The snorkeling in Key West is also well-known, with one of the best reefs in the world just off the coast of the island.

Key West is also known for its amazing cuisine. Most restaurants either have ocean views or outside seating. You just can't leave Key West without trying either some crab cakes or the dessert that they are known for… the Key Lime pie. And, of course, it would be sinful to not experience a margarita on the Keys. Jimmy Buffet is a wise man… there is nothing better than wasting away again in Margaritaville.
