What Type Of Art Should You Teach Primary School Kids?

Finger painting is a given...

by Sam Qam

With art being such an important subject for every student's emotional and creative development, it is sad that it is not given more time in the average child's school schedule. They need to be able to think about so much more than just numbers and letters so they can grow up with skills to match the demands of modern society, which includes being able to appreciate the world around on many different levels.

So what types of art would be not only fun for kids to learn about, but would help them learn skills they will not necessarily pick up from other subjects?

Minimalism

Minimalist art is anything like architectural design and music which have been stripped down to their simplest parts. Minimalist buildings for example tend to have nothing but the bare essentials needed for the structure, still presented in an attractive way, and cuts out any fancy twists or frills. Designs even go so far as to blend taps into walls and handles into doorframes etc so that the simplest form can be maintained. This would be an excellent type of art to teach students as it will help them to appreciate simple things. So often advertising and marketing teaches our children that more is better, whereas the principals of minimalism will show them that simplicity is beautiful and that they can cut out stuff they don't need.

Abstract

Abstract art involves any kind of composition which has been created without much if any direct reference to a recognisable visual reference within the world. This basically means an image of something which doesn't exist. This type of art was created as a response to rules up until the mid 19th century which demanded that art fit into the logical trappings of perspective and visible logic to be accepted.

For a child to be able to think in the abstract is an important mental step. If a child can be taught to think about more than just what is in front of their face, they will be able to develop concepts and to 'think outside the box' earlier. This will allow them to develop their creativity, not only on field easels but in their day to day lives too. Craft supplies UK don't need to be reserved for painting still life.

Primary school kids are too often thought of as simple things that can only understand simple ideas, but with the right stimulation with something like an art class, you will be able to explore just how much potential their little minds have already.
