The 5 Best Types of Multitasking Contemporary Furniture

by Tina Mahony

Furniture has changed an incredible amount over the last few years, & Italian furniture in particular has come on in leaps & bounds both in innovation & design. One of the ways furniture has evolved in in the area of multi functional contemporary furniture - furniture that performs two functions well, with no compromises. Our favourite multi tasking items are

1 Coffee & console tables that convert to dining tables.

Although not widely available several of the better Italian manufacturers have a selection of lacquer & wood coffee & console tables that very cleverly convert into dining tables in seconds. The 'Magic' console table has an extending frame & a series of extra leaves for the top which can be added in. Simply pull the legs out & add the number of leaves you need in, resulting in a respectably sized dining table of 120cm x 190cm.

The Flip & Simple coffee tables have folded over tops & concertina legs, simply lift up the top to extend the legs, fold the top over & you have a dining table.

2 Italian sofa beds

Sofa beds are nothing new, but comfortable ones are. The new Italian sofa beds have properly padded & upholstered seats & look like extremely stylish contemporary sofas. But they also have sophisticated metal extending beds with 12cm thick sprung mattresses, easily comfortable enough to be used every single day.

3 Multi tasking wardrobes

We have noticed a trend for using customized fitted wardrobes all through the home, not just in the bedroom. Wardrobes make fantastic laundry cupboards, hall cupboards, TV units & even home offices. Italian fitted wardrobes have an enormous choice of internal drawers, slide out shelves & baskets & can be divided up any way you choose & they don't even have to have a hanging rail.

Sliding door wardrobes are great for halls & living rooms too as their doors don't need to be opened out into the room so take up less space. Home office wardrobes are a combination of special desks for wardrobes, open units, shelving & drawers & are great for teenagers bedrooms.

4 Storage beds

Although these aren't strictly speaking multi functional they do serve two purposes, the first as a bed & the second as valuable additional bedroom storage. The lift up mattress base means that the whole inside of the bed base can be used for storage - which is a decent amount of extra storage.

If you have a storage bed you may very well forgo having to buy an item of bedroom furniture too.

5 Single sofa beds

These are actually single beds, but the way they are set up with a matching cover & cushions as well as padded headboard, footboard & back mean that they just look like stylish day beds. Available in sophisticated designs & plain fabrics for adults, or colourful & fun for children these sofa beds look every bit as good as daybeds that don't also double up as spare beds.

Great in a spare room that isn't quite large enough to hold a full size bed, or in a hall way the best ones are made by Italian company Bonaldo. They have some interesting options for the base as well - it is possible to get a folded down second bed to go inside the base, so that you have two guest beds not just one.
