The New Skid Steer Attachment-Shoulder Boom Mower
Any skid steer attachment capable of keeping it's operator safe while mowing is a big plus for those doing big jobs like mowing for the county highway department. The odds are most county highway departments own one or more skid steer loaders but when it comes to handling the work that comes up during mowing season, there is one skid steer attachment that handles the tallest grass and weeds with ease.
There are many situations when the skid steer operator would rather his or her machine not follow along the same path as the skid steer attachment they are using. It can cause more work or more clean-up to have to haul a skid steer loader out of the ditch, not to mention the risk of injury to the operatore and damage to the machine. Oftentimes, mowing projects go unfinished because of safety concerns. Other times, though, it is simply safer to separate the skid steer attachment from the skid steer machine by off-setting the operation to the side of the vehicle.
The boom arm mower is a skid steer attachment that has been specially designed to get the skid steer equipment off to the side to do its job. It allows the skid steer operator to mount several different kinds of mower head to the skid steer vehicle, and then to mow, trim and clear light brush all off to the side of the skid steer. This innovation has been developed so that a skid steer operator would be able to mow along the shoulders of roads, along fence lines and even in overgrown culverts, dikes, and ditches, without actually driving the machine into those features.
Soon, a skid steer operator will be able to use a universal mount for almost any skid steer attachment to the boom arm mower, and the working options available to the contractor could be virtually unlimited: the skid steer owner could employ an auger, a rotary broom, a roto-tiller, or any other useful skid steer attachment or implement that makes sense to off-set from the track of the skid steer. At the moment however, the different skid steer attachment options that are usable with the boom arm are a side-oriented mower and a five-foot sickle-type mower.
There have been a number of different dedicated skid steer attachment options made in recent years that make fine use of the spaces to either side of the skid steer loader. There are attachments for dumping granulated materials and those for mixing and pouring concrete. But the boom arm opens the door for a universal approach to skid steer attachment innovation.
