A Deer On the Highway
Auto manufacturers have observed a constant innovation on the headlamps of vehicles. The earliest type is the sealed beam of incandescent lamps that prevailed during the 1940’s. These were eventually replaced by the halogen lamps in 1970’s. Then by 1980’s a regulation has mandated the use of replaceable headlamps for vehicles which in turn paved the way for newer car designs that included various types of headlamps.
The next generation of auto headlamps that allowed for all this progress came into main stream in the era of 1990's. These were termed the High Intensity Discharge lights - more commonly known in the auto parts trades as xenon lights. This type of light is far more efficient than the previously available types of headlights. That is its light intensity is higher by 60% as compared to the old style halogen lights with lesser energy consumption.
Light Emitting Diodes or LED lights are the most recently introduced type of light these days. There have been several vehicles out in the market that uses LED lighting although for daylight lighting only. It was the AudiR8 Company who had made possible the beginning of LED lights for auto headlamps. These are actually semiconductors that are chiefly composed of silicone. They are very much efficient in transforming electric energy into light, with just a small energy input they can give out bright light and less heat output. Plus they have been proven to have a longer life span as compared to the old style lamps. These characteristics can definitely make this type of light the light that will be used surely by the car manufacturers for their future car designs.
For the cars that still sport the sealed beam headlamp type, you can luckily and conveniently now have this upgraded into replaceable sealed units. A wide array of manufacturers can provide you this type of product. Each seems to offer different and yet distinctive types of lighting patterns due entirely of the unique lenses created by each company. It is better if you will look at the lighting pattern first before you have it installed in your car. But if you already have the replaceable type of auto headlamps then it is easier to have it improved since you will only adjust the bulbs and not the entire assembly.
A wide collection of headlamps are available in the market although these must qualify certain standards set by the Department of Transportation for them to be considered useful on high-ways. The standard set was in terms of design of mounting, configuration of connector and colour temperature of the light produced by the bulb. The most common colour temperature is in the range of 4100 to 4300 Kelvin. The bulbs that produce this type of colour temperature range were usually the ones used by the OEM manufacturers in creating their automobiles since these can create bright lights comparable to daylight. Although some cars may be emitting lights that have higher colour temperature range like bluish or purple tints at 5000 to 6000 Kelvin these do not necessarily mean they are showing more intense light. They just display different light colour and that's it. You may have different color for you headlights the only thing you must consider though is the DOT symbol on that light to really determine its efficiency.
General Electric (GE) has been offering their headlight named as Nighthawk bulbs. These are absolutely capable of creating brighter light as compared to competition. As much as possible go for the branded types of headlamps and avoid the cheap ones. This is due to the fact that the cheap ones tend to have a filament that is not appropriately focused which in turn can decrease the intensity of light it can produce.
The replacement kits for your headlamps that are commonly available in the market these days are the xenon and bi-xenon lights. The latter has been more popular because of its capacity to function in both low and high beam operation. LED replacement kits are not yet available in the market these days although they may be in the years to come. LED lights though are now available which you can use as replacement to other lights in your car. These can create brighter light, they can last longer and they respond faster making them competent as your brake light. LED's can surely give you a more secured and convenient evening drive.
It's surely one big fun time driving out there on America's roads and highways today in 2011.
