Saving Time With Paint Sprayers

by Mick Trueman

When you are faced with painting projects, large or small, you will save time and get a more professional look when you use paint sprayers. Depending on the project, you will have to make some decisions on what type of sprayer to use. There are several kinds of sprayers to choose from. The type of paint and what it is you are painting will help you decide which product to purchase. You may even decide to rent a sprayer. Sometimes renting is a more cost effective way of getting the job done.

You need to first evaluate the type of project you are working on. It may be large, like painting a house or a garage. You may decide to rent a sprayer for this type of job. The cost of a large piece of painting equipment may not be a good choice when you could rent this equipment and save on the cost of buying it if you will not use the painter again in the near future. A large rented sprayer will cover the job in a smaller amount of time than a smaller painter. So, if your budget is an issue, you may want to check into renting a sprayer.

To decide on the type of painting equipment you need, you first have to analyze the type of material you are covering and the type of paint that will be used. The courser the material, the more spraying coverage you will need. Also, the thickness of the paint will need to be considered. Some paints are so thick that they will need to be thinned. These factors will help you determine what type of sprayer to use.

Using a sprayer will save a lot of time. Using a roller and brushes is very time consuming and does not always produce the professional smooth look that you desire. You may end up with roller marks and brush strokes that are visible when the paint dries. The sprayer will not only save you time, but with a little bit of practice you will end up with a professional looking finish that looks smooth and free of blemishes. Stroking out the spray pattern takes less time than rolling on the paint.

The following is a list of the sprayer and a brief description:

. Cup painters - These are small and used mainly for crafts, touch ups, and trim. You fill the cup and a small hose sucks up the paint to be sprayed out by the machine.

. High pressure air sprayers - This type of sprayer has a lot of pressure so they may splatter and there may be overspray. These produce a fine spray and are good for large jobs.

. Airless Diaphragm sprayers - These are commercial types and have a constant feed. They have a gas or an electric motor and a diaphragm or a piston pump. They can spray a path anywhere from 2" to 24" wide.

. High Volume Low Pressure - These sprayers are great for the smaller, more intricate projects like crafts, trim, and varnishing. All kinds of interior small projects work with this type.

Whatever your spraying needs are, you must also remember safety. Interior projects should be masked off and you should use drop clothes to catch the paint drips and wandering spray. Don't spray on a windy day and wear protective clothes. All kinds of paint sprayers can cause a severe penetration injury. So, enjoy your project with your sprayer and see your great results.
