Home Wind Mill: Just How Much Will They Cost?

by Roger Brown

The home wind turbine can be an excellent addition to other efforts that you might make to reduce your energy costs at your house. While they are no substitute for carefully examining your energy usage and making subsequent adjustments, the home wind turbine can offset those purchases that you do make from your utility every month and thereby lower the amount that you pay significantly.

That being said, you need to make very certain that you optimize the wind device to your specific circumstances. If you happen to be in a very low wind environment you need to make quite sure that you buy a device that will function at the lower end of average wind speeds around the country. The lowest I have ever seen is 1/2 mph cut-in speed for a Honeywell home wind turbine. That is uncommon though. Most cut-and speeds are in the 7 mph range.

How much these devices cost you might ask…

Well, that really depends on your circumstances but for the lower and home wind turbine you can expect to pay between $600 and $1000. That of course is before you install the device. Everyone's circumstances require a different level of installation.

For example, if you are in a very high wind environment and have no permit restriction that keeps you from putting in your wind turbine at 100 feet in the air, you can get a much larger device and produce enough power to possibly even supply all the electricity requirements at your home. That is certainly a lot more expensive proposition, but it just illustrates the fact that you must strive to understand what your options are.

At the very high end of this cost spectrum you can find home wind turbine devices available from dealers that will be quickly turnkey and include detailed analysis of your particular location. Those devices will cost more on the order of $16,000-$40,000, depending on who you buy from and the composition of the materials used in construction. You may not need such device though. That is why it is so important to do some of your own homework before you begin this process.

What I mean by that is you need to understand the wind patterns and wind signature at different points around your house where you might install a home wind turbine. That is best accomplished with a small anemometer that you can mount in different locations exactly where you would put the wind device, so that you can measure actual wind conditions and know exactly what you are getting into before you try to put the equipment there.

In conclusion, home wind turbine prices are all over the board, but you can get a great idea of what yours will cost if you study what your specific requirements are before you begin and then price your device accordingly.
