Utilizing Flyers for Marketing Your Restaurant

by Lawrence Reaves

One good way to think about marketing a new restaurant is to "go where the people are". Obviously you can't go into someone else's restaurant and solicit customers there, but there are plenty of other places where people gather and you can use those locales in order to market your restaurant.

1) Take to the streets. Depending on the laws in your area, you may have a great deal of freedom to put up your flyers on telephone poles. Of course, here you have to be somewhat strategic in your thinking.

Word travels fast. If you are opening an inner city restaurant, it may be a very bad idea to hit every telephone pole in a ten block square area. You may get more people than you can handle. Try going three blocks in each direction starting two weeks before opening day. If that doesn't bring in quite enough traffic, expand to five blocks in every direction.

2) Put it on the boards. The marketing of suburban restaurants using flyers has to be approached very differently. Here you don't have many people walking along the roads, and there may not be many sidewalks either. So finding community bulletin boards is going to be a better approach. These can be found in local exercise centers, schools, churches, grocery stores and other retail shops. Obviously you have to get permission of the managers of these locations, but if you approach it the right way, that's not too difficult. Just give a discount coupon for your restaurant to the decision maker, and you'll have no difficulty.

3) Show up at the party. Community events, whether inner city street theater or community lawn sales out in suburbia, are a fantastic locale for distributing your flyers. Whether walking around and talking to people or manning a booth with samples of your restaurant's fare, you can hand out your flyer to any number of people. Most people don't want to litter, and so a high percentage of your flyers will make their way to someone's home.

A qualified printing company will be able to help you with determining the options you need to meet your marketing needs. The key is creativity - not just in how you design your flyer but in how you distribute them. Unique methods of distribution could be just the thing to get your message across to your target audience. So always be thinking outside the box.
