Free Host Providers

As they say, free is always better, but they also say that you get what you pay for. This does not mean you will come across less than acceptable hosts 100% of the time, but it does mean you need to be careful. There are a few potential problems with any web host, though they are more prominent with the free host providers. Take a look at this list and see if any of it is familiar to you:

Problem: You upload your website and discover that 90% of your content is missing, even though it has all been placed in the appropriate folders on the FTP server.

Explanation: Your web hosting provider does not permit certain plugins such as Flash, Shockwave, or Java on your free tier.

Problem: Your website experiences downtime.

Explanation: The server your free website is on is being used by thousands of separate users, and as a result, the high traffic causes bandwidth issues. If you utilize a paid server, you will have higher bandwidth and fewer users.

The problems above are quite common with free web hosting providers, though you should be able to find a free host that minimizes these problems. In order to find such a host you will need to look at the big-name providers as they will have both the funding and the bandwidth to maintain a web presence. One great example would be Google, having introduced the Google Sites service recently.

Web hosting can be a complicated concept, but it is not impossible to work out, and you may find that the free option is best until you can secure the funding or the clients to justify the move to a more expensive plan. As you can see, free web hosting is not really the preferred route, and there are plenty of problems with it. If possible, try to find a large host that works with corporate clients on a regular basis. There are many that allow for a test period that will permit you to know whether or not you really wish to go with their service. In addition to that you can usually hold a real domain name with your web hosting service while using the free option. There are many roads open to you, and it's up to you to choose the right one.
